Atlantic puffin.jpg

It is a sea bird from the alk family. These birds are found mainly on the high seas, prefer cool waters of the North Atlantic. During the breeding season in the spring they inhabit rocky shores or grassy slopes, where they establish nests in deeply dug holes. They can be 2 meters deep. The largest colonies of puffins are formed in Iceland. Other important breeding places are the northern and western coasts of Norway, Shetland, Greenland, Faroe Islands or Newfoundland.
In common with other seabirds, its upper surface is black and underside white. This provides camouflage , with aerial predators unable to observe the bird against the dark watery background and underwater attackers failing to notice it as it blends in with the bright sky above the waves.
In Icelandic, these birds are called lundi.
North people believe that puffins are a posthumous figure of sailors and fishermen who died at sea.
