Veganism -The domesticated pet situation

One day when all cages are empty at the shelters and we do not have the crisis we have now we will have to rethink how we live with non humans. Now some idiots go to the conclusion that we should let domesticated animals die out. I personally am against it because they deserve better than genocide. Human owe a great debt to non humans and most of our advances as species could have not happened without the help of non humans. But what started out as alliance (wolves building packs with humans in mutual beneficial situations, soon turned into something sinister and out allies became out slaves.

We love our non humans but in the case of the majority of humanity it is a psychopathic love ranging from horrorfilm grade behaviour to a semi benevolent house slave type situation. Truthfully however even we vegans who have fur/feather/scale family are slave holders. We rip our kids from their natural family, take babies from nonhuman parents and give them away like they are objects, they are not allowed autonomy over where they are, who they are with, or when they are allowed to eat and in some cases even go to the bathroom. We desex them, if they fall in love they are not allowed to live with their beloved if they are not living in the same household as they are. Granted we live in a world where it is unsafe for them to do so and a time period where too many of them are alive to allow them to procreate but that does not change the moral status of what we are doing, no matter how well intended it is.

For some reason however there is a huge fraction of vegans who propagate genocide as the solution. i find it appalling and deeply disgusting. So for millennia we abuse and exploit them and then decide we morally cannot keep ding that so we erase them ? WTF! Are they artificially created tribes ? Yes but they exist and have earned the right to keep on existing! We have no right to just wipe them out because it is o longer convenient or distasteful to us to keep on being slave holders.

So what is the solution once a vegan world is established ? For me it is this, when it comes to animals like bovines and horses create sanctuaries where they are more in a safari park situation. Assisted by humans but with acres if not miles to roam freely and where their next generation s can learn to become self sustainable and free. The same with pigs, sheep goats guinea pigs ect. when it comes to fish create pond sanctuaries, stop capturing and breeding ocean fish. Introduce those ocean fish back into the wild that we can be allowing a generation or two to live in ocean sanctuaries until we are sure they can survive on their own. Traditionally domesticated cats and dogs have even stronger bonds with us, it isn’t only because we chose it to be but because interacting with us has become something that is encoded in their very DNA. Dogs have even evolved to have traits and skills that their wild counterparts ,like wolves and dingoes, do not posses. the Science behind this is super interesting. It is the reason why some feral dogs seek human contact even if they were born in a stray situation. But our current approach if locking them into our homes cannot be the end solution, it is morally reprehensible longterm !

So what is the solution ? In my view this:

In Istanbul of the early 1900’s and before that cats were considered a blessing to the city(sadly this has changed although some still practice the old traditions). the city’s cats would run free belonged to no one and everyone . The community fed them, vetted them they were allowed to visit people in their homes but where never trapped or locked in. In my mind we should adopt a similar concept long term where we have community supported tribes of dogs and cats who are allowed the run of the city. If a dog or cat likes hanging in a persons house by their own volition that is their choice but in my perfect world it would be illegal to lock them in unless it was an acute veterinary situation. people who would want to be visited would have the option to install cat and dog doors into their hoes to allow access or to keep their homes visit free but would no longer be allowed to hold anyone in captivity like we do today. Obviously we would still have to violate some of their freedom when it comes to population control when it comes to having babies and i have not quite figured out how to do this yet. I have thought of maybe having feeding stations all over the towns and cities and to administer contraceptives through the food like we do with pigeons in friendlier city’s that don’t poison. But that solution is not perfect for so many reasons., but let us hope that when the day comes where we can make the decision to truly free them all the solutions will be there …

Im convinced that cats saved humanity!! the plague and the black death was supposedly spread by fleas on rats. And occured at a time when humans believed a cat was a creature of the devil and would not let them in their homes. A coincidence?
Thousands of cats in greece are (for want of a better word) feral and do and go as they please, they seem quite happy and live in harmony with the people. Its just normal, both in cities and rural areas!!
