Fairy Gone (Episodes 1-6) Review

in #anime5 years ago

We are in a position that, after six episodes of this show, I end up having very little I can actually say about it. The premise is pretty clear, there was recently a Unification War where people known as Fairy Soldiers were the ace fighters for any side. Having undergone organ transplants, these Fairy Soldiers have the organs of Fairy's inside them so that they can fight using a fairy that is bound to them.

One of our lead characters was a fairy soldier who is currently working to keep the piece in matters related to Fairy's and the Fairy Tombs, which are the books detailing research on fairies. Our other leading character is a survivor of the War looking for her friend Vern. Briefly working with the Mafia to find her, she comes in contact with the former Fairy Soldier and becomes possessed by a Fairy. Aside from running around with a Fairy being illegal as a civilian, she is enlisted in the government forces in order to keep an eye on her since she is possessed by a fairy despite having no signs of a transplanted organ.

This seems like an interesting idea, but after six episodes I'm not even sure how many factions are actually involved in this anime, or what anyone's goal even is outside of a couple of people. So far we've just kind of seen things happen and the most bare-bones of characterization included, and the only major plot thread of a page of 'The Black Fairy Tomb' turning up ended up being fake, so nothing even came of it.

After six episodes the show has failed to really explain why it is I should care about these people, and with so little plot happening that is about the only thing that could carry your interest. I understand where the characters are coming from on a surface level. You have a former soldier with no other place to go, however, you really don't see him struggling with normal life at all, so the character falls a bit flat. You have a girl who is eternally 'unlucky' trying to find the friend who saved her when her village burned down, though you never see her being all that unlucky, at least not in any meaningful way. I could go on, but after that many episodes, you just aren't given enough reason to care about any of these characters.

What really drags the narrative down though is how often people are just being incredibly stupid. Primordial Fairies, which are the ones that people fight with, are just kind of kept on display with no guards around. You have two people patrolling, but need to go off and leave all of them unattended. A guy later uses his fairy to cause a scene to so he can get away with stealing something, but the only reason anyone knew he was there is he caused the scene to begin with. The girl who thinks she is 'Unlucky' is because her parents both died, and everyone in town called her 'Little Disaster' because they were all inhumanly pricks. I don't mean that there were just excessively mean, I refer to the idea that nobody would act this way. These events, however, drive the narrative. It makes the whole story seem flimsy at best.

I am a bit torn on the animation because the Fairy's are all CG, whereas you have more normal animation for everyone else. If you see just the Fairy's fighting or even just the people, the scenes look fantastic. But the mix of them just feels like they don't belong together. It would be one thing if that were the intent, but Fairy's are a known part of this world and have been for some time. Even if it worked thematically though, they just don't do a good job at meshing them together. The Fairy's don't seem otherworldly, they seem like they are in the wrong show.

The show has a solid premise, some interesting ideas for characters, and some fantastic fights. The problem is they just can't seem to deliver on any of these, at least not for the first six episodes. It's a show I think could be good, but as it stands it just can't seem to give me a reason to keep watching past this point. I think it's best to give this one a pass.
