Apple intends to exclude from the App Store applications with funding based on crypto mining

in #apple6 years ago

The re purposing of mobile device processing resources by application developers using cryptocurrency mining as a means of financing has become such a problem that even the reputation of these platforms is threatened. In order to end the uncertainty, Apple has updated the list of developer criteria for accepting apps in the App Store.

New rules introduced last week explicitly forbid the use of software components for cryptocurrency mining, whether they are left out of sight or hidden, as part of a background process. The use of iOS devices to generate cryptocurrencies is thus strictly forbidden, as this is true for all apps in AppStore.

However, the restriction does not apply to other applications related to cryptocurrencies, such as electronic wallets or exchanges that directly transact cryptos. Exceptions include applications that make it easy to mine cryptocurrencies without using the device's processing resources, but using cloud technologies.

Similar restrictions on the mining activity of cryptocurrencies have been announced by Google, but they are just addressing the use of Chrome extensions downloaded from the official Chrome Web store store.

While some would see this like a stopping of the advancements done lately, I see it rather as a normalization fact. Mining should be a conscious process through dedicated applications and not otherwise different. And is a pity to use smart devices just to scrap some cryptos due to their limited performances, instead of living them for the purpose that were created and which can help develop. As long as we keep things separated I think that all is good as the main purpose is achieved and the related industries grow. And, let's face it that if you want something to be the best it needs to address that with the upmost and focused scope and use.

Great article and newsworthy to me. I think it's a good thing that Apple takes this step. Yes it's a centralized move in a centralized ecosystem but in order to keep things relatively safe for people some order might have to be maintained. I think the amount of people wanting to legitimately mine with their mobile is probably miniscule and wouldn't be surprised if cryptojacking malware is rampant.. I myself have been hesitant to download and install apps (Android) because I worry about these things. Even on my desktop it sometimes feels like every other site out there starts miraculously using up a more than average amount of CPU power (I notice my fans spinning up).

Looked at your profile, saw lots of interesting crypto articles so I gave you a Follow. I myself write mostly about crypto too, maybe you'd be interested in having a look at my profile as well!

I'm getting a little tired of Apple's stance of crypto apps. I have an iPhone but am seriously considering getting an Android just so I can use some of the cool apps available, such as @eroche's restaurant app.
