Computer Virus - lightpainting with a circuit board in my kitchensteemCreated with Sketch.

I recently managed to acquire a printed circuit board from the scrap bin at work. I immediately saw the potential when I used my camera phone to shine a light through and knew it would make a great tool for lightpainting!

This is tonight's image I made with it:

First I set up the circuit board at roughly a 45 degree angle to the camera focal plane and focussed on the chip for a shallow depth of field. The board was lit from behind with a little Coast TX10 quad colour flashlight with it's fairly unique blue. At the same time (yes I must have three pairs of hands!) I shone a red COB LED light from the front very briefly so as not to overexpose the front of the board. This is part one of the process:

Once happy with part one, I set about aligning part two. For this I used a fairly unique multicolour bulb from Ikea, the "Gamsebo" and worked out the angle of the other tripod head so that it panned towards the corner of the frame thus:

Once the test elements above are sorted and obsessed over (as usual!) I then set about shooting all this in one photographic exposure. I started with the board, lit it up, then replaced the lens cap without ending the exposure. I then swapped lenses and tripods to the pre-arranged tripod in front of the Gamsebo bulb. I then exposed for the bulb and panned across to the rehearsed angle. Lens cap on, ended the exposure, job done!

I've been calling these kinds of shots, "SOOK" as in straight outta the kitchen because they literally were created in my kitchen!

About me: I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.

Cool stuff mate. Love the board tilted so it falls out of focus.

Thanks pal, I was actually trying to get a red stripe across a circuit board of green. I got in a mucking fuddle with three flashstands so sacked it off when I noticed the shallow dof!
