  إن كنت ممن شاهدو شاهدو هذا الفيلم فستعي جيدا ما سأتحدث عنه ، إن كنت تتطلع لإلقاء نظرة عليه ، فالجزء القادم لا يهمك لأن فيه خرقا للقصة والأحداث وسيفسد متعتك .. يبدأ الفيلم بمشهد لليونارد شيلبي وهو يستيقظ متسائلا عن مكانه وكم الوقت وما الذي أتى به لتلك الغرفة المشؤومة ! هناك أوشام عديدة على جسم ليونارد سنكتشف فيما بعد أنها تمثل الوسيلة الأولى ليعرف ليو سبب وجوده والدافع من حياته ، إلى جانب الصور التي يلتقطها ليتذكر أسماء الأشخاص ، ليونارد شخص يعاني من مرض فقدان الذاكرة على المدى القصير ، أي أنه يتذكر كل ماضيه بإستثناء ما حدث بعد الحادثة حين تعرضت زوجته للإغتصاب والقتل وأصيب هو في رأسه ، آخر ما يتذكره هو أن زوجته قتلت وأن عليه الإنتقام من قاتل زوجته ، ويستيقظ كل يوم على هذه الفكرة ، قبل فك شفرة الفيلم ، وجب الإخبار أن الفيلم عبارة عن مقاطع متناثرة لا تخضع لتسلسل زمني ، هي مشاهد مبعثرة تماما مثل عقل ليونارد وذاكرته المشتتة ، فيبدأ الفيلم من النهاية ويأخذك إلى منتصف القصة ثم يعود بك إلى النهاية ثم إلى البداية .. ويترك لك حرية تشكيل الأحجية للحصول على الصورة الكاملة للقصة ، قصة سامي تلك التي تتكرر بشكل كبير طوال الفيلم ، هي من اختراع ليونارد حتى يستطيع أن يشرح حالته للآخرين ، بوصفه هو سامي ، زوجة سامي قتلت نفسها بجرعة أنسولين زائدة لتتأكد ما إذا كان سامي يتظاهر بالمرض أم حقا هو مريض ولا أمل في شفائه ، فعمدت إلى تغيير التوقيت كل مرة بعد الحقنة ، سامي يتذكر جيدا أنه يجب عليه حقن زوجته بالأنسولين ويتذكر الوقت ، لكنه لا في كل مرة يظن أنه الوقت المناسب لحقنها ، شخصية أخرى مهمة ، هي شخصية تيدي المحقق ، الذي استغل هوس ليونارد بالإنتقام لقاتل زوجته الذي لا وجود له غالبا ، ليستعمله في قتل أشخاص آخرين مستغلا حالته المرضية ، وفي كل مرة يوهمه بأن ذاك الشخص هو قاتل زوجته ، ليونارد سيحاول العثور على قاتل زوجته مهما كان الحال وتيدي لا يقتل أحدا ، والأرباح التي يجنيها تيدي من عملية استغلال ليونارد يقتسمها الطرفان سويا ، ناتالي هي الأخرى تستغل حالة ليونارد المرضية للإنتقام لحبيبها تاجر المخذرات من مطارديه ، اللان هما تيدي وليونارد نفسهما ، لكن ناتالي لا تعرف هذا الجزء ، يختتم الفيلم بإقتباس : ''علي أن أؤمن أن هناك عالم خارج عقلي، أريد أن أؤمن أن أفعالي لا تزال لها معنى، حتى لو كنت لا أتذكرهم. علي أن أؤمن أنه عندما أغلق عيناي فالعالم لا يزال موجودًا، فهل سأؤمن أن العالم لا يزال موجودًا؟ هل ما زال موجودًا؟! نعم… فجميعنا نحتاج لمرايا لتذكرنا بهوياتنا، فأنا لست مختلفًا – يضغط على المكابح فجأة – الآن، أين كنت؟‘‘
