My First MMO: Mu Online

Mu Online... I have tons of great memories about this game, in fact, from time to time nostalgia hits and I return to the game to play for a while until I eventually remember why I left on the first place but this is no place to talk about that, instead I'm going to focus on the good stuff and what made me play this game for so many years before dropping it almost entirely in favor of World of Warcraft.

Mu Online was originally released in 2001 and it didn't took a genius to realize early on what the game was, it was a korean diablo/diablo 2 clone but as the saying goes Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Being a clone doesn't outright make a game bad or have less meaning, it just is what it is, a game mostly inspired by the diablo franchise with MMO elements.

Finding a Niche

If you ask any person that was addicted to Diablo 2 in the early 00s what was the aspect they enjoyed the most about the game, they will 100%, undoubtedly say the same thing: Trade! People loved the trading aspect of Diablo 2, there where forums entirely dedicated to trading, people did transactions with real money for in game items maybe even the first couple of transactions of fiat for digital goods happened on the battle.net servers at Blizzard...

But this trading wasn't that supported by Blizzard and players weren't really given the proper tools to trade thats why it was such a player driven effort and players created forums and chat boards for that. Mu Online saw the opportunity behind this and basically built the game from the ground up with trading in mind. Trading is built into every aspect of the game, from items to consumables to skills, everything is tradable and if you want to succeed, you've gotta trade, it's almost impossible for you as an individual to farm for everything you need so you'll have to trade.

The Classes

The game initially launched with 3 classes, the Dark Wizard, The Dark Knight and the Fairy Elf (pretty edgy 2000s class names lol)... You don't have to be a genius to figure out these classes, The Knight was the Melee class, the Wizard the magic ranged class and the elf was the bow/support class. These days the game has over 8 classes, even after 18 years since launch, the game is still active and still being updated and as far as I know, it's still really profitable for the company that runs it and still has a pretty active player base across the globe.

This game holds a pretty special place in my heart and if you are ever looking for a loot based action rpg, you should give it a shot, the game was released in 2001 and its pretty hardcore, its not like the easy peasy, casual washed games we get this days, if you want to git gud you have to invest hundreds of hours into it. You can get a bit ahead with real money these days but only in experience to level up and that doesn't really help that much since the real character power comes from the items and you only get items by playing!

Are there any fellow Mu Fans here on Steem?

My first MMORPG was also MU, I remember that the first server I played on was from my city.
