Hypothetical Illustration of My City: Riverside
Hello Steemians, today I would like to start a new series article title Hypothetical Illustration of My City. In this series, reader will expose to author imagination on hypothetical Illustration of cities. City revitalization or even sci-fi scenery could be part of this series. Therefore, hope you will enjoying this and future contents as well.
Hypothetical Illustration could be conceptual or practical city planning idea that can be adopt into the real-world situation and hopefully it could be realized.
In this article, I will share about Rejuvenate or revitalization project. The content incorporated some case studies and how we could achieve it with a local city as a subject for this experiment.
Let’s begin
I would like to contribute my thought and ideas to any rejuvenation project/proposal out there especially in Kota Kinabalu. Therefore, in this section, readers will expose to author conceptual idea that will be fully illustrated in Computer generated graphics. If you have any comments or suggestion, you are welcome to drop some comment for further discussion.

The site is located at a riverside that situated next to a three to two storey shop office in the city center. Along the river, there are hotels, banks and shopping mall situated next to it. However, none of the development generate a mutual relationship with the river. Instead, it treated the river as another typical drainage system.
Choosing this site
The site is choosing for this project is due to the easy access to the river side. Furthermore, the proposal could be easily adopted at any location along the river.

Based on the original image, carparking located next to river and probably here could be a no man land where only fast-moving vehicle pass through here, and there were no pedestrian walkway or platform to support human activities.
Edited image illustrated the possibility and the future of the river. The proposal consists esplanade and walkway like a staircase that were design toward down to river water level. It maximizes the human activities along the river (jogging & cycling) and added addition path way between places (3km of river side).
Without compromise human safety and activities when river water level rise, people could still utilize facilities provided on the street level while esplanade and walkway down at water level will be close off.

Make our river great again
Not just for jogging or leisure purposes. A revitalize riverside could welcome businesses flourish the area, such as food and beverage industry or entertainment facilities.
Temporary structure like food kiosk above could be rented out for vendors who would like to venture into food and beverage at riverside. furthermore, revitalize riverside will not only benefits temporary kiosk like this, it also increase the values of any development next to it. In addition, it also promote existing local businesses who will not just await their customer from the road anymore.

Wetlands are great to create natural ecosystem for fish and birds. Furthermore, it also helps to minimize water pollution when city drainage discharge into the wetlands instead of directly to the river. In addition, it also reduces volume of water flow into the river, hence minimize the risk of water level rising.

Conclusion
In a nutshell, the riverside proposal is just a hypothetical perspective on how it might looks like once it was revitalized. It give everyone a glimpse of it and a hope to restore the river quality to a be Class II B water quality (suitable for recreational usage).

To have manmade wetland there would be pretty interesting :) plus floating platform for pedestrian path and cyclists, going through the wetland along the river, it will be another hot spot.
yep, together with selected trees and certain species of wetland culture.. it can cool the environment too and makes it more comfortable during afternoon hour.
That's very cool. I think some promotion of local floral and fauna should be done too. Imagine having ducks or fishes swimming in clear water
Agree, like in some of the drain in japan . they have koi fish in it. that will be cool and it mean the water are clean enough to be touch by hand.

Sad that our river has sub-consciously turned into a drain. Good approach, some solutions may be needed to change public perception so that these ideas can be implemented. If pop-up events could draw public interest to it as the river is cleaned up, slowly public involvement would increase perhaps. Not too sure what Melaka town did to revitalize their river, need to check how successful theirs was. Could be a precedence.
like the idea of pop-up events. educative and informative for public and the eyes and ears of the local authority as well. Perhaps the park(ing) initiative could be one of it, however really like to push it as soon as possible after done with my work. Im not sure about how Malacca did it too, but would like to know how both Kuala Lumpur River or life and Malacca did it.
