Symbol of the richness and power of the Tuscan capital during the 13th and 14th century, the Florentine cathedral is one of the largest buildings in Christendom. Its name refers to the lily, symbol of Florence, or the old name of the town called Fiorenza. But, on the other hand, a 15th-century document states that the "flower" refers to Christ.

Singularly noteworthy is the grandiose cupola, the work of Filippo Brunelleschi, a isostatic structure of 100 m of interior height; 114.5 m of outer height; 45.5 m of outer diameter and 41 m of light (inside diameter) with the peculiarity that this dome, in itself, cancels the horizontal thrusts not to transmit to the drum that it sustains almost more loads than the vertical ones corresponding to its own weight. o the dome you have to add the campanile of Giotto, an independent belfry, drawn by Giotto, 84.70 m high, and the baptistery of San Juan, with the famous bronze doors of Ghiberti. The ensemble, formed by the church, the Belfry and the baptistery, is one of the artistic and architectural jewels of Florence.
