Down with the old...but not the oldest...

The winds of change are a foot in downtown Victoria BC. The newer half of the original post office is being demolished. Opened on July 1, 1898 after three years of construction. The building has been home to many government offices which included the post office over the years.

In 1952, the postal services moved up Government Street to the 1200 block and the building was converted in 1956 for Customs and Immigration use. At that time a series of alterations produced a building that was devoid of ornamentation and didn’t even match the original building, basically creating a very strange looking structure that did not fit its surroundings.

Early in 2016 the building was sold and designated to be altered into condos with some of the best views in all of Victoria. The Customs House will be transformed into a set of 57 residences. Ranging from 1,450 sq.ft. to 4,400 sq.ft., the units will be some of the most expensive real estate ever sold in Victoria. At up to $10 million per unit, the residences cost a pretty penny.

I love this city and everything that is happening to it. I spend most of my time living and working from Victoria. Every year more and more people come from all over the world to check out Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island.

It’s a little out of my price range that for sure, but I some people out there will be snapping these up really fast.
