[EN] Vertical Garden in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country (Spain)

in #architecturalphotography6 years ago (edited)
On Monday we arrived in Vitoria, in the north of Spain in the Basque Country to visit Alberto, an old friend of my family.

As soon as we arrived at his home, we left our backpacks, cooled off and went for a walk to get to know the city, take some "potes" and have dinner together.

On the way to the center, we found this building lined with vegetation that quickly caught our attention.
Alberto told us that before it was used as a social center and organized cultural events inside. Now, it is renovated and houses the Congress Palace of the city.

It is a vertical garden on the facade of Avenida Gasteiz of the Europa Conference Center. It was created in order to encourage nature to enter the city through green infrastructures.
The plant facades improve the thermal and acoustic insulation of the buildings on which they are created, prolonging the useful life of the building and reducing energy consumption. In addition, they improve the conditions of the surroundings since they allow to introduce vegetation in urban zones where there is no available ground; they help improve air quality, reduce air pollution and mitigate global warming. Also, they reduce the heat island effect of the cities thanks to the evapotranspiration of the plants, create urban biodiversity spaces and improve the landscape quality, making the urban space more pleasant.

From left to right this building proposes a tour of the municipality of Vitoria - Gasteiz. Starting at the bottom of the valley, it shows the contact of the urban area with the Salburua Wetlands that surround all of Vitoria with the so-called Green Belt, to continue crossing the rural area of Llanada Alavesa and finish in the forest area of the hills and the Montes de Vitoria.

I found this vertical garden to be beautiful and a great initiative in the heart of the city, composed, for the most part, of local species. I hope you liked it and, if possible, leave me your comment telling me what you think.

See you soon!

Hola amiga,

Qué chullo!

I love vegetation mingling with buildings.

If you think about it, we humanity did the opposite, building where nature was thriving first. We invaded nature's privacy and are still doing that all over the world bu we need nature to survive, breathe and to not go insane.

I love to see how nature wins back it's (natural) position and I easily prefer that over the contrary ( neatly clipped hedges and artificial grass gardens, to name two examples ).

P.S. I'm glad to see a written post by you again. Writing mixed with photography seems to be one of your strengths.

Un abrazo,

Vincent

Saludos
