Weekly Challenge: Share Your Deep Thoughts on dApps

The following post is part of the Sndbox Weekly Question series, where cohort members have been encouraged to explore dApps outside the world of Steem - Weekly Challenge: Share Your Deep Thoughts on dApps.

Now, maybe I’m going wrong but my experience of dApps outside Steem has not been great. In fact, the only platform which I’m quite excited about is district0x, which I think has real potential to change how digital communities operate. They also have one of the most visually pleasing websites I have ever seen.

Change my mind; I would appreciate any recommendations for other dApps in the comments below.

With that in mind, I have turned back to ol’ faithful Steem and decided revisit an dApp I haven’t used for a while. That dAapp is Elegance.
 
 

Elegance

Built on the Steem blockchain, Elegance is a platform for artists to share their work to a like minded community. Following the principles of Steem, it dishes out upvotes on selected works to incentivise users to post through the platform. It looks and operates similar to Busy, so moving from one platform to another isn’t too much of a problem.

One thing that originally drew me to Elegance is the concept. They have effectively created a curation platform for art, using the cryptocurrency-based incentives of the Steem network to encourage creation and sharing. This idea is something I would be keen to explore further from an architecture stance.

Posting
To test out the platform I decided to post something I would normally post through Steepshot onto Elegance instead.

The upload was a visual by @franziska_w of her Mauerpark Market Hub project.
The upload process was very simple, with one minor hiccup in the middle when the image itself didn’t show for some reason, but after a couple of minutes and a refresh it was there. The post can be seen in all its glory here: link to post.

Pros

• Great for posting original artwork
• Opportunity for upvote from Elegance
• Easy to use, due to similarity to other platforms

Cons

• Not ideal for reposting
• Upvoting is not clear, what gets an upvote?
• Curation and quality of “Top” posts is questionable

   

Would I switch from using Steepshot to using Elegance?

Unfortunately not, although Elegance has a good potential for a curated art platform, it doesn’t seem to be the place for architecture (and the products such as renders, models and drawings).

Whilst the majority of CritDay activity is still on Instagram selected works are shared on Steem, via Steepshot. Steepshot has been the platform of choice due to the similarity to Instagram, as a platform it is easy to use (ignoring the minor glitches) and most beneficial of all it has a mobile app. Also, there are a greater variety of posts and content types on Steepshot, which perhaps makes it a better home for CritDay.

So for now at least I’m sticking with Steepshot.
