STREET ART #47 – «Your Stories make me forget those Prison Bars» (Denmark)

in #art5 years ago (edited)

This is the tittle of Herakut's 50-meter long mural which depicts a child's fantasy and friendship with a dragon that will take her to another world. It was painted in 2018 and is found in the center of Aalborg. It is the first mural Herakut has ever done in Denmark.

My sister, who lives in Aalborg, is a great fan of street art and keeps track on everything new that turns up. On a windy sunday we did a 10 kilometer walk to get around to every new piece I haven't seen yet. This one is not quite new, since it was painted last year. It's just that I hadn't seen it before.

She told me that it is Gallery Kirk in Aalborg that engaged Herakut in connection with their street art project - "Out in the Open". This project, together with the «We Aart Festival» has resultet in Aalborg becomming a great open air gallery. Many street artists have painted large murals over the past years. I think there are about 60 murals in this city by now.

It took Herakut three days to paint «Your Stories make me forget those Prison Bars». They turned the gray concrete wall into a large, colorful painting with the dragons and the child.  A mural that has political undertones .... Children are still put behind bars in some places in the world.

The mural has incorporated the already established «bars» on the wall in the story – the story of a young child and her dream. Because the artists wanted to show the dragons and the child being behind bars, this wall was perfect. They didn't have to paint the «bars». They were already here in the cement.

Herakut is a German duo consisting of Jasmine Siddiqui (Hera) and Falk Lehmann (Akut) who started to work together in 2004. During the years since then, they have created a large number of murals all over the world. Often the subjects in their work is an imaginary world, like a childs dream world which often is embodied with animalistic characteristics. They are storytellers. I can easily become a fan of their work. I was very impressed by this mural to say the least.

I was touched by this article because of what it represents in terms of the child population.
The realism of the look and how the painting is done behind the bars is extraordinary.
Also the time it took, three days: Wow!
You have a narrative that catches and forces you to read the article in its entirety.
Stay Great!

Thank you for your comment :) the painting made an impression on me too. Stayed quite a long time looking at it. One of favorites.

That is an amazing piece, that's for sure. It certainly looks better now, I bet. Those bars shouldn't be a very pretty sight before the Graffiti was painted.

Thanks for your article and photos, Ulla!

PS: I think you've included the second paragraph twice by mistake. 😉

hehe you are so right! Was just checking if people actually read it, kidding and thanks for your observation! :)

Ah ah! Sometimes I wonder the same. 😃

:) I was actually quite stunned when I looked at this piece of art and we did spent some time at it. It is large so you have to walk along it and study the detailes. On the photos it looks as if the bars are painted, but they are not. And the eyes of that dragon....

Beautiful mural, I didn't know this artist duo Herakut, a lot of talent, the dragon's eye is stunning.
Everybody read your post :-)

I didn't know about them either. First time they did a mural inDenmark. They did a real amazing piece here. The eyes, as you say, are abolutely stunning. The way the tell the story and make use of the natural "bars" makes this a piece that will become one of my favoutites.

Thanks for reading :) the comment was meant for trinkowski who noticed my mistake. Very observant! I hope he won't start correcting my english as well! Easy to make some spelling mistakes .... :)
