Speed Painting Part: 2

in #art6 years ago

It is super convenient to tour projects in different classes and so I give you more of the speed paintings from the Roundouse this time. No library here but we do have a stash of National Geographic magazines and also some basic watercolor kits which allowed me to take what is normally a drawing class into painting just this once. The in house watercolors are student sets from Yarka, they cost 9$ at local stores. The brushes available were underwhelming but with a small group of 2 students, we had enough brushes with soft bristles. We used the same rules as last time so here is the original post in case you feel curious about how long we had to make them.

I painted this ant with the: Paint something from the first couple pages you open rule. I found a giant poster in the recycling, tore myself a piece and painted on the back. It is very interesting to paint on thick glossy paper. It is waterproof but has very good adhesion for the binder to stick on.

This was the warm up to my ant. Can you guess what it is? With this one I realized, for the nth time, that the raw sienna from the Yaris kit is quite useless. More filler and you end up with Joan Rivers.

Michael is straight up amazing. He needs minimal guidance but my advice to give the face more tilt worked to his advantage!

Emile was a drop in I met today, She is thinking of coming back next week for the last class of the session. It’s strange because she put the guideline for the eyes too low but when I completed the elipse for her, it was right on the eyes. You see I had taught her to draw a face seen from above so the curvy guideline was like a bowl or a smile. In the photo she used, the lens was about at mid-chest of the subject so the guideline would be like a n or a mound. These curvy guidelines for the eyes become paramount to draw 3/4 view.

If you are painting on a budget, a Yarka kit and a tube of raw sienna will do wonders, I recommend it. Looking in the recycling for unexpected supports is a winner for the environment AND your wallet. Remember, it’s not about the final result, it’s about experimenting and enjoying yourself. These timed exercises lead to a lot of breakthrough when artists practice them. Ironically, when you don’t have time to over-think, there is a precision to the method you will use to solve problems. It empowers your instinct and when you let it take over, more often than otherwise, it’s surprising to see how smart it is. That inner beast.
