Nº#11 | The art of graffiti.

"When the spray rings.... the blood runs through my veins.." —Anonymous.

When it comes to graffiti, we are facing a form of manifestation and practical expression within the cities of the world. This type of art is carried out mostly by youth groups, which are responsible for spray painting (aerosol painting) on walls or public / private property (walls, doors, windows, trains, vehicles, etc..). These young people are called Writers (writers), as is known these young people make use of their spray to leave their "footprint" on these properties, an action that is considered by many as an act of vandalism that merits a legal sanction.

Muralism and graffiti in Mexico.

And so began the movement

While some claim that the movement began in Philadelphia with a cartoonist named TOPCAT, there are those who talk about his beginnings in New York, the important thing is that all this art appears in the 60s. TAKI 183 a 17-year-old New York boy who worked as a messenger and left his signature everywhere.

From that moment on, New York's youth began to imitate him and leave their signatures all over the city. The objective for that moment was basically to dominate the spaces and the amount of signatures left by the young people, their fame grew as they left graffiti in dangerous or normally inaccessible places. This was considered vandalism and authority began to act against these young people, however graffiti continued to spread to other nations.

Art gradually transforms from an act of vandalism to an artistic act in which the works no longer consist solely of a signature but also seek to demonstrate something through the walls.

The diversity of graffiti.

According to Lynn, N and Lea J.S:

Graffiti is formed through text, content and social opinion, thus forming a visual communication. For this there are 3 genres of graffiti that are presented below:

  • Art Graffiti Extracted from the music of the American streets "hip-hop" of the 70s and 80s. Those who work in this genre call themselves "writers". It is that the name of the artist can be embodied in 3 different forms:
  1. Tag, written in a unique style and personalized using 1 color.
  2. Throw-up: it includes letters, words or a list of names and 2 colors are generally used.
  3. Piece: which is the most elaborate, minimum 3 colors are used and it takes several days to complete it completely.
  • Slogans Also called "public graffiti", Halsey and Youg say that slogans start from personal opinion through the range of political problems (environmental concerns, feminism, state policies, international relations, etc.), but all share the fact of wanting to express towards the audience in a natural way, their way of seeing things.

  • Latrinalia Also called "private graffiti". It is the kind of graffiti that is done in bathrooms, that is, on walls, doors, mirrors that are found in bathrooms. Occasionally it contains drawings, words, including poetry or personal reflections.Source.

Graffiti characteristics

Graffiti consists of different characteristics that make it look like such, divided into anonymity or art of not leaving the signature on their works but rather leave identifiable clues; marginality or art of demonstrating social sectorization and protest messages before the established system; scenicity or realization of art in public places with great attractiveness; spontaneity or ability to perform graffiti at any time and place; speed or struggle against time; language or ability to express a clear and concise message.

Graffiti artists in such a way give a message that is understandable in culture and in turn has an understandable social significance.

This Art Why was it born?

Society always wants to give its point of view on any subject, there are already numerous attempts by sociologists, psychologists and other professionals in the field of the study of human behavior who seek to explain this phenomenon but never give an answer that is not superficial. There is talk of fields such as non-conformity, rebellion or even antisocial behaviour, but in itself their studies are based on stereotypes and it takes more than that to know the real why of a graffiti artist, and not just explain it with a very small sample that perhaps do not have a philosophy of why they paint. To give a reason for this art the first thing is to be a graffiti writer or feel as such and on the other hand, study the fact from various points of view.

These artists tell us more directly that their sense of wanting to paint a wall is basically that need to express themselves and be recognized within that anonymous universe, but at the same time it's not just about that, there's something else.

Los Angeles Wall - Caracas, Venezuela.

It could be said that children and monkeys share something special at least until the years: the natural artistic potential. Both of us are able to make drawings scribbling and choosing the most vivid colors. Only while monkeys do it only if we give them the tools and a well-deserved prize at the end, children quickly learn new ways to express themselves and recognize elements such as colors and leaves and learn from the process. The child learns that these instruments are for drawing on those leaves and that it can go wrong if he does it outside of it, but that he nevertheless has this desire to want to do it outside of it (as we see in most happy children who scratch almost anything in a house), this because they enjoy that ability to get out of the pre-established. In graffiti, exactly the same thing happens, only here we try to turn graffiti made on aerosol walls into symbols of visual violence that transgress the law and at the same time cause us the satisfaction of leaving the pre-established rules.

There are also motivations such as competition and territorial brand.

What now?

Graffiti is basically born as an anarchic and transgressor medium and that is its spirit: illegality. But at the same time if we observe, we realize that graffiti is just a zero degree of violence, the smallest vandalism that can exist and that on the other hand has an artistic character and becomes a plastic phenomenon full of techniques, styles and a unique language, coming to be understood from a completely pictorial point of view regardless of ideologies or places where they are made.

Legal graffiti (art) and illegal graffiti (vandalism).

Currently galleries seek to exhibit many types of art, graffiti is already part of these in some places, where the works of many writers is well presented, leading perhaps to a commercialization of this art but in turn providing respect and support to it. However, this subject is seen by some as an advance for graffiti, while the purists and conservatives see it as a taboo in graffiti when it comes out of that vandalic and anonymous style of graffiti.

Graffiti is communication, it brings something to the pedestrian who observes it, it is a way of educating the human eye and teaching people to pay attention to their surroundings. Graffiti contains a diversity of messages full of unique senses acting as the voice of the voiceless.

And what is graffiti to you? Art or vandalism?
