3D Capillary Origami or Micro Origami

in #art6 years ago

3D shapes are made by using liquid drops on a planar sheet or membrane using very precise predetermined dimensions
The final shape is determined by the initial shape of the flat membrane or sheet

This type of origami can be used to revolutionize material manufacturing by use of #3Dprinting and micro 3Dprinting technologies.
Below is an example of a elastocapillary water grabbing pipette made by MIT

According to MIT it is "inspired by floating flowers and relies purely on the coupling of the elasticity of thin plates and the hydrodynamic forces at the liquid interface."

This type of action is readily found in nature including ice plant seed capsules that are hydro actuated

This mechanism was reproduced in an actual origami style conceptualization.

This is brilliant. Ive seen micro origami before but not water activated micro origami.

Yes I think it truly innovative and is quite beautiful.
