PENCIL: My Evolution Over The Years

I hated school. The only subjects I liked were Art and Japanese. Maybe it was because I was a skinny poor boy and kids were mean in the 90’s. I knew Karate, so I wasn’t bullied much, but the few times I was, I defended myself well. I convinced most of my teachers that I listened better when I was drawing. I gave most of my drawings away, but here are a few that made it to a scanner and Google Drive.

By some miracle, this drawing survived the 90s and made it to a scanner. This was my first comic drawing of Rouge from X-Men. The year was 1993 and I was 13. I surprised myself with this one. I remember thinking, “Wow, I can actually draw a human.”

Before this, I only drew pictures of whatever the art class wanted or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I drew so many pictures of the turtles that even to this day, I have a 3-D blueprint of them in my mind and can still draw them quickly.

Back in the day a young boy like me couldn’t buy a Playboy or get online to look at naked women. The internet was still new and most homes had just one PC. There was no way I could have used my mom’s PC to look at sexy girls. So must of us found what scraps we had and would draw them. I didn’t see a Playboy until I was 16 and internet porn until I was 17. I wonder how being exposed to porn so easily is affecting young minds. When I was an IT teacher, I spent so much time thinking of ways to block porn. Kids as young as ten were finding ways to get it. Back in the day, just half naked girls from the Sears catalog was exciting to us.

I don’t remember anything about this one. Typical American teenage boy nonsense. I guess I wanted to be buff like Arnold and have a big gun too.

Same with this. I don’t remember anything about it. Was I an early ISIS member? Maybe I played too much Mortal Kombat.

Angela was an angel bounty hunter sent from Heaven to kill Spawn. Well you couldn’t kill him because he was already dead, but once his energy was drained he would go back to Hell. Spawn was a really cool and well drawn comic. Too bad it never made for a good movie or game. At the time I thought this was so great, but looking at it now I can see the impatience and sloppiness I had.

Here’s the picture I put up first so it would show up as the thumbnail. Is there a way to put in the HTML code so Steemit displays an image you choose to be the thumbnail rather than just the first one?

I drew this picture on a dare. It was 1999 and my friend and fellow soldier, Jessica, didn’t believe I could draw. She was better at everything than me. I think she was a genius. She’s probably CIA now. It felt good to prove her wrong.

I couldn’t find a job in 2011, so I used my GI Bill to get a second Bachelor’s degree and once again I took Art for the easy credits. We had a week to draw this still life, but I finished it on the first day.

This was another weekly drawing that took me about an hour. The teacher was happy with me, because I gave him all my drawings which he sold and used to buy more supplies. That’s always a good way to guarantee an A.

This was a picture I drew of Bow. I’ve divorced twice and have had my heart broken many times, but never as much as she did. She was the only asexual relationship I’ve ever had. When I explained to her that I was asexual and what it was, she told me that she was the same and asked why we had sex those few times. I told her I thought that was what she wanted and she said that’s what she thought I wanted too. I still miss her and think about her all the time, but she has some rich old Japanese doctor that gives her millions. I don’t blame her, I’d do the same if I were her.

Well thank you for reading my post and looking at the few pencil drawings I was able to save over the years. Have a great day and may the Force be with you. I have spoken.

Great recap & storytelling. Looks like we’re the same age so a lot of your early influences and drawings bring me a nostalgic smile!

I had a piece of Violator fan art printed in the letter page of Spawn... my crowning achievement! Y’know there’s a new film in the works that I have high hopes for... and amazingly Spawn is still going strong after 300+ issues.

The drawing you can’t really recall I instantly recognized! You were clearly digging Whilce Portacio’s Wetworks at the time! Hope this brings a shock of nostalgia to you too...

And lastly, I believe that the SteemPeak website interface does have tools to choose a different image for your post thumbnail. I’d have to double check that though... I haven’t played around with it much.

iMage comics were so much better than Marvel or DC back then. Wow, you really did bring back some nostalgic memories. I feel like the 90s never really ended. I like to joke and say the year is 1990 29. Dancing wise it’s true. I remember when I was in the military in San Diego back in 2002, my friend was 32, but looked 19. When we all started to dance and he started snapping his fingers and dancing like it was 1985, EVERYBODY was looking at him funny. Not today. I’m 40 in a few months and still go clubbing. Maybe it’s just because no one can dance in Laos or Thailand, but I’m the best dancer. I never thought an old man could still be cool when I was young. We got lucky because the hip hop style dancing we did back in junior high is still working today. Maybe it wont work in the USA. I see my teenage daughter and her friends look at me like it’s a crime for trying to be cool or young. It’s something only the under 25s are allowed to do or something. Who cares? I had more fun in my 30s than I did on my 20s.
