Gut-Level Comics

When someone has a gut-level reaction, it is unmistakable. This represents a deep internal movement down to the very soul. These intense feelings sometimes act as a helpful urgent warning, yet sometimes they are also initiated by feelings that can betray us.

I've had gut-level reactions to all sorts of things. And usually it is not pretty. Many examples abound: when others have betrayed me, when dark injustice has run free, and most bothersome, also when I have done something wrong, yet cannot articulate precicely what is out of order.

Gratefully, the Bible brings clarity to all those situations. When something moves me deep down, I have learned to not merely embrace this emotion blindly. Instead, I usually first ask myself, "What scripture would apply properly in this circumstance?" When there is a solid standard for behavior, as the Bible details, then we do not need to rely on the unpredictable whims of our emotions, gut-level or otherwise.
