If you don't comment on the photo, I would have imagined that it was a surface of another kind, and the pieces of ice were placed on it creating that irregular volume effect. The colour reflected on the glass seems to show a cloudy sky, perhaps accentuated by transparency. The hail fall must be a truly surprising and strange phenomenon.
