Edgar Allan Poe Exhibit: Los Angeles, CA

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Last night we went to check out the Edgar Allan Poe Exhibit where Amanda's contributions are currently being shown. She submitted 3 paintings, and all three were accepted.

Through the front window of the Azul gallery, you can see the two original raven paintings that I first posted about here.

The gallery is a pretty cool little place with a lot of quirky stuff inside. They have an old fashioned theater where they show old movies from time to time. I especially like the restrooms of all places. They are really nicely decorated and have some interesting decorations. In the men's room there is a full out old fashioned dentist chair and tools set up!

In the above shot you can see the 3rd painting that Amanda submitted of the fighting ravens. As we suspected, the majority of submissions would include some type of Poe portrait, so that's why we decided against painting anything with his face on it. The submission requirements were pretty broad. Something to the effect of Submit artwork related to Edgar Allan Poe.

The following are some shots that I took with my smartphone camera. The next one is pretty nice, but unfortunately I was unable to get a good photograph after multiple attempts because of the glare on the glass.

I was amazed that I was able to take the first shot with no one in it, because the room filled up pretty quickly shortly after we arrived. The next image is of a bust that our friend James Muscarello created. If you remember, he also made a couple of awesome sculptures that Amanda is currently exhibiting in her personal studio.

This piece is pretty awesome too and was submitted by James' wife Kiera. I may be misspelling her name as it isn't the normal spelling! I'll come back and correct it when I find out.

The neat thing about this piece is that there is a little mirror at the bottom that reveals a hidden sculpture behind!

I have no idea if the next item is part of the exhibit. If it is, I don't know what it is supposed to be. But it is interesting looking nonetheless. Maybe a Poe fan could enlighten me?

The next piece is also by local Artist, James Muscarello. Nice touch with the little door.

That's pretty wild

As you can see, lots and lots of portraits. I wonder if any of the artists were hitting themselves after seeing the exhibit.

Some of the extras were kind of fun as well. Check out this halloween decoration that was painted to look like Poe

Overall, I'd say that the exhibit was a success on opening night. The place was pretty packed all day and Amanda was getting some really good feedback on her work. I think that she's going in a good direction with the style that she's been developing while working on the ravens. I'm excited to see what she comes up with next!

I'm very happy for Amanda, and impressed with her work. I like especially the fighting ravens. It's neat that the gallery used it as a focal point for the portraits. Not just visually pleasing, but symbolically logical, because Poe struggled with his demons so publicly.

Congratulations to Amanda.

You know, it's funny, that painting was mine and her least favorite of the three, but everyone else loves it the most. Especially the gallery owner!

I don't want to belabor the point--I looked at her raven pictures. The brush work is wonderful, especially the way she tapers the feathers at the end. But Poe was a story teller. The fighting ravens tell a story, a dark story. People like drama, they like action. And Poe readers are drawn to a certain darkness, even violence. All of that is in the fighting ravens.

Very interesting photos! Thank you for sharing!

Every piece of portrait is wonderful. What a beautiful art. I love it. Hope that you and Amanda really enjoyed exhibition a lot.
