It isn't a requirement but it is a little bit of a "tradition" on this site and you will pick up a few extra followers and upvotes so it is helpful. You only get to use it once, though, or some people might get upset.
Things can be pretty slow when you are new but it will pick up as you post. When you are just starting it is also very helpful to comment in communities that you want be active in here. That will yield the best quality of follower and it will be more profitable until your posts start earning.
