Sitting in a Corner Contemplating the Fragility of Life upon Hearing News of the Demise of MS Paint - Self Portrait, 2017

in #art7 years ago

Apparently Microsoft have decided to cease updating MS Paint and possibly won't be including it in future Windows releases. This is my tribute the iconic program.

MS Paint is easily one of my most used pieces of software. I have spent countless hours in MS Paint as a child and still use it on a regular basis as an adult today. It really will be a shame to see it go considering it's been a part of Windows since 1985.

I remember one of my most used techniques in Paint as a child was to fill a blank page with black using the paint bucket, take the spray can and increase the size as much as possible (which was quite a lot back then) and use it to paint white on top of the black to create stars, after that I'd draw planets and spaceships and all manner of space related things. I had so much fun creating those little spacescapes back then.

I might play around with Paint some more over the next few days and add some more pictures to this post.

Anyway, if you have any memories of Paint from your childhood share them in the comments.

I have an ancient version of photoshop - it has not really changed since 7 except for bells and whistles. I just needed to turn off the thing that made the license expire.

I've never used photoshop. MS Paint was my photoshop back in the day, haha.

I know.- I was just saying that I still use the old thing - I just bought a new used phone that apple stopped supporting - I don't care what they do - I will keep using the old things which are much better quality than the new.

It's hard to imagine a world without MS Paint. I guess technology has moved on though, even on a cell phone you can get really good free drawing software.

True, but I don't have any emotional connection to any drawing/paint apps available on a phone. And I really enjoy old and obsolete technology, especially something that really restricts your ability to do what you want, it makes you work for it.

Also, I don't like change...

It's amazing what people can do with obsolete and limited tools. Sometimes the limitations become the spur to create something new and unique.

Have you read the blog Hyperbole and a Half? That girl built a career out of MS Paint illustrations and touching childhood stories. Wonder what she's going to use next?

My copy of Photoshop 5, from 1998, is still the best I've ever used. I install that thing on every computer I get, and it runs like lightning. But incompatibilities with Windows 10 mean I'll probably have to go open source and switch to The GIMP full-time. The latest versions of Photoshop seem to require a monthly rental fee, and I'm not really into renting my software.
