My sculpture: "I Wonder" - life size bronzed resin

This sculpture was commissioned by a grade school and the City of Joliet, and was part of my work for Friends of Community Public Art in Joliet, Illinois, USA.

I told the teachers at the school that I wanted to do a sculpture on the idea that reading and learning could and should be a fun experience, and not drudgery. So I decided on a little girl reading in a tree, and they agreed to it.

I have fond memories of going to the library as a child and coming back with my ''treasures" - the books for the week. I would get lost in the stories and was quite oblivious to outside noises and events, which got me in trouble from time to time.

The teachers in the school asked for parents to bring their little girls so I could choose my model. I think I surprised everybody when I chose a morose chubby girl instead of one of the perfectly coiffed and beautiful children that were presented to me. My choice can be explained by this reasoning: I wanted someone who could be lost in her thoughts and oblivious of those around her, and totally uncaring of her appearance. Reading and contemplating are activities that can be enjoyed by all; young, old, beautiful, homely, regardless of personality.

The mother of the little girl was extremely helpful and did her best to keep her mind occupied while she posed by reading to her. It is not easy for a young child to hold still for long periods of time.
