Messed Up Mets
The New York Mets ended a first inning rally early as the Wilmer Flores and Asdrubal Cabrera batted out of order. The goof had costly ramifications at the Mets lost 2-1. "It's frustrating," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. "It probably cost us the game."
A Wilmer Flores strike out was followed by an Asdrubel Cabrera ground-rule double that bounced into the stands in left field. Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman immediately took the field approached plate umpire Gabe Morales with his lineup card.
After consulting with Riggleman, Morales ruled the next batter, Jay Bruce, out to end the inning. Cabrera did not get credit for his double. In the Mets dugout, the lineup card had Flores was batting second with Cabrera batting third as opposed to the handwritten lineup card presented to umpires where Cabrera was batting second then Flores.
Callaway said the lineup he gave to the umpires was correct but said the computer logging was wrong. It was a costly gaff as the Mets would go on to lose against the second worst team in all of baseball. It also drop the Mets into fourth place in the NL East after losing 8 of their last 9 games.
