4. BBQ tips on plant based food + Ice Cream

One of the best things about summer is to gather a group of friends and family to have a BBQ. One of my favourite spots to eat is near the beach … at sunset. For years I’ve been eating the usual hotdog or hamburger. But since I’ve only eaten plantbased for the last months, I had to reinvent what I should put on the grill.

The most quick and simple thing to do is to buy fake meat like soy hot dogs or quorn hamburgers. But since many of them are processed, I wanted to see if I could be a little more creative.

A lot of people who aren’t vegan or plant based, don´t know what do offer you at a BBQ. Personally, I always take my own food with me. Mostly because I don’t want to end up hungry at the end of the BBQ, because all I got was a salad and nuts… because that’s the only thing we plant based people eat, right? So, instead of letting people feel guilty or confused, bring my own super delicious food. 🙂

Being creative

Let’s start with the “meat”. There are tons of ways you could make a burger. With beans, mushrooms, beats, nuts, soy, … Personally I like to mix beans with soy. In Sweden we have this brand that lets you mix and match their soy minced meat. Just put some spices and preferably BBQ sauce in the mix and you get the most amazing burger.

What can I put on the BBQ?

Well, anything really! For this article we grilled tofu and put it in a gluten free bun, together with a vegan potato salad, guacamole, grilled tomatoes, spinach and marinated mushrooms.

The second burger was made with soy mince, a gluten free bun, red cabbage salad with pumpkin seeds, grilled tomatoes, small grilled potatoes with a mustard/agave dip. The possibilities are really endless.

Dessert

With this vegan “hype”, a lot of companies are trying to change up their product range. And even though this could be a good thing, it turns out not all of their products are great. Vegan is not equal to healthy! We found this new ice cream in a box, just like the usual Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream. It tasted really good in the beginning, but the aftertaste was a little chemical. As we mentioned before, we always look on the ingredients list. Sadly we found some disturbing ingredients in this ice cream which could cause problems such as asthma and cancer. Please check if the food you eat does not contain any E-numbers or other not-by-the-body-liked additives.
So instead we made our own ice cream. So simple and so delicious..
One with strawberries + one with chocolate with Renee Voltaire Chocolate Nibs.

We are looking forward to a sunny and healthy plant based summer.
