Better Half
This might be the best beer I have had in sometime. Better Half by Founders Brewing Co
Curmudgeon’s Better Half is a 12.7 percent ABV old ale brewed with molasses before being aged for months in bourbon barrels that previously held maple syrup. Formerly known as Kaiser’s Curmudgeon, the ale was renamed Curmudgeon’s Better Half in 2012. This is one of my favorite releases of the barrel aged series.
I poured this one in my trusty mason jar for that rustic feel. It pours a deep amber with a tan/khaki head that disappeared into a thin creamy head.
The aroma is beautiful with loads of bourbon, oak, maple, vanilla and sweet delicious malt.
The taste is similar to the aroma as I thought it would be. The maple flavor is more forward and paired excellently with the bourbon, vanilla and sweet malt. At 12.7 % ABV I thought it might be too heavy, but it’s dangerous because you can’t tell it’s that high of an ABV. Honestly, I was pleased at how smooth this really was.
The mouthfeel is smooth with such a complex flavor that added the perfect amount of carbonation that enhances complex and rich flavor.
Overall, I have to say Founders knocked it out of the park. The beer hits all the right notes and leaves you feeling satisfied and slightly buzzed. I’ll definitely be picking up a few more packs to get me through the up coming cold Michigan winter.

Great post and a decent ABV - dark beer is special - I prefer more the wheat beer type - think I have to start my #beer series again especially now as Oktoberfest is starting next week here in Munich - did post last year almost daily.
I’m a lean towards dark beers, but Oberon (wheat beer) is one of my all time favorites. It was one of my first craft beers I had. It hold a special place in my heart. I’ll definitely check out your post if you do a beer series. That would be awesome!

12.7% ABV is heavy!! Nice fire you have going there!! The beer looks great - nice dark amber color.
It does not feel heavy which is amazing. It was the perfect beer to hang out by the fire on a nice cool night.
