Beer - Ending and Beginning Eras

As we blaze towards the weekend where we can be warriors, it is again time for a little spot light on beer which will fuel us through our adventures the next couple of days.

Today, I will fill you in on the last stop on my epic long weekend extended brewery tour and show you something besides IPA from another Ontario craft brewery. We close an era and open a new one at the same time. Strap on your drinkin' socks and lets do this!

Great Lakes Brewing - End of an Era!

IMG_6202.jpg

I have blogged many times on Great Lakes Brewing Company http://www.greatlakesbeer.com/ in Toronto. From them being responsible for my slide into the love of IPAs with Lake Effect IPA (http://www.greatlakesbeer.com/Beer/lake-effect-ipa/ still a favourite today,) to the awesome one-off special beers, to the fact my brother works there and has a FANTASTIC staff discount. Well that is coming to an end soon as he moves on to a new brewery but I will still buy and love Great Lakes.

I stopped in there last week to grab some beer for Sailing https://steemit.com/dtube/@zekepickleman/f5kcxiky and had a chance to sit down for a beer fresh from the taps while waiting to purchase. This is a nice Robohop Imperial IPA http://www.greatlakesbeer.com/Beer/robohop/ on the neat inlaid bar top they have at the pub. It is smooth for an imperial with not much of the extra alcohol in the taste and hoppy as all hell. I wonder about the 100 IBUs but definitely love this beer when it is available.

Upper Thames Brewing - Beginning of an Era!

IMG_6142.jpg

I had the chance to visit the Upper Thames Brewery https://upperthamesbrewing.ca/ and used the @tasteem platform to showcase the food and drink. https://steemit.com/tasteem/@zekepickleman/tasteem-84cb33 This one is only 40 minutes down the road and my not have the history and variety of IPAs that GLB has, it is still good! The Brickhouse Brewpub has good food and a really neat facility which will make for a nice road trip the next time I head South-East. I took away a few different varieties which didn't live long in my fridge!

IMG_6196.jpg

Timber Beast Brown Ale - https://upperthamesbrewing.ca/our-beer/ This lives up to its name as it boasts a beastly malt flavour from the "large percentage of caramel malt in the grain bill." It is a little more of a sipper while reading a book than a chugger while mowing the lawn. Friends of mine who are more into the hop than the malt would probably turn their nose up after tasting this as it was almost too malty and syrupy for even my taste. I would get it again if it were not sitting right beside their yummy IPA on the shelf.

Dead Reckoning - Ontario Pale Ale - This is a really neat beer. Generally, a Pale Ale without the India in it comes off as a little too light, bland, or simple on the hops. This one, however, has that trendy unfiltered clarity, "a blend of locally sourced Cascade, Rakau, and Glacier hops", AND a little malt flavour added in despite the Pale moniker. The generally pedestrian strains of hops actually combined to give it a good flavour punch and the malt was just enough to add to the taste but not overpower or be washed away by the hops. Very good and tasty and I would actually get one of these for every Portage IPA or Take a Hike IPA https://upperthamesbrewing.ca/our-beer/ for the fridge.

You have a new advocate Upper Thames! Well done!

I'm not a fan of beer, but I the process is interesting and smelly: my father brewed it and for a time, I lived downwind of a brewery. The Husband enjoyed the aroma much more than I. I'll stick to my wine, thank you. Except on a really hot day when I might enjoy a shandy.

Happy day, Zeke!

A social drink is a social drink! You and wales probs my have the better idea with the wine which I like too, just not quite as much.

A brother who works in a brewery is a good brother to have.

This is indeed true! I helped get him his first brewery job with a friend of mine. His second one was with Great Lakes which we tapped him for his discount many times. This new brewery is a little bigger but mainly does Pilsner so I am not sure I am too excited about it. ;)

Love the idea of Beer Saturday, @zekepickleman! Looks like you got some yummy brews to celebrate with - oh, and...

Yah #beersaturday was a sort of epiphany here as I strive to come up with content as a new blogger. “You mean a group of beer gurglers have rallied under a tag championed by a great guy you would want to have a beer with?!? I’m IN!!”

I thank @matkodurko for that and try an keep an eye out for others when I see a tag that would be a good match for their good content.

LOL! Sounds like a plan! 🍻

Beer Saturday! I love it! Beer any day!

Cheers mate!

Here’s looking at you good buddy.

Sounds a bit bittersweet. A day trip like that is always nice.

I can always go to the brewery and probably will. Just have to pay more with no staff discount.

Otherwise, it is all good and great while it lasted.

We have brewed cider, but not beer. I prefer my beers to be crafted else where. We have a brew district here. You should come for a visit and enjoy with me.

Cider brewing is legit. I really want to learn how to brew cider as a good post apocalyptic survival skill.

A beer tour in Korea? I could definitely go for that!

Enjoy the taste of hops, thick one looks like something to enjoy in winter months, lighter for summer.

That’s a good way of arranging things. For me, the dark ones are for a change no matter what the season. Summer, I seek out the session IPAs (lighter, less alcohol) and the winter I lean more towards the imperial IPAs!
