The Bernie world view on trade and immigration.

in #bernie6 years ago

The fact that Bernie "do we want more immigrants or more jobs for our kids?" Sanders is still a sought-after endorsement on the progressive left concerns me greatly.

Is the pro immigrant rhetoric just an excuse to be anti-Trump or has the left actually come around on the rights of immigrants and foreigners? I wish there were a solid answer. It's getting to the point where I'm actively hoping his endorsements lose so people will stop seeking him out in the first place.

Hey, I get it. It took me a few years to admit Ron Paul wasn't so great after all (ironically it was his view on immigration that put me off). But the clock is ticking and there shouldn't be room for his anti-trade, anti-immigrant rhetoric in any humanitarian movement.

Also, he's not going to cut it out because the zero-sum nature of economics is central to his blinkered worldview. He views every gain as a loss for someone else, every bit of new wealth created as a theft from someone who would have had it otherwise.

It's nonsense, but it's the core of his worldview. And in that worldview, every job worked by an immigrant or foreigner is a job NOT being worked by an American.

Bernie's view on trade is that the US shouldn't trade with any countries that cannot match the US' wage, labour, and environmental standards, which is a nice way of saying "we should only trade with rich/white countries."

My sense is that that particular plan would affect immigrants in that it would create a lot more of them given how many economies would be strangled by Comrade Bernie's embargo on the developing world.

And of course, that's where Bernie's actual anti-immigrant position on the border comes into play, because when those people show up looking for the prosperity we stole from them, Bernie will tell them to take a hike.

That's why he wants to restrict immigration and that's why he wants to cut off trade to the entire developing world.

He's not going to stop believing this stuff because once you start tugging on that particular thread, the entire conception of the world collapses.
