What to eat in Yangon | MUST-TRY FOODS IN MYANMAR

in #beststreetfoodinmyanmar5 years ago (edited)

One of the best ways to truly explore the country is through its foods. Thus, if you are a foodie as much as we, the first thing that you are going to do once you land in Myanmar is to search for what to eat in Yangon. The best way to experience the taste of Myanmar is by going all in with the street foods, where small street stands specialize in one or two dishes. Burmese cuisine is one of the most diverse amongst Southeast Asian cuisines, mainly, due to its large influence from Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and Thai cultures. Therefore, this guide will be the perfect start for your trip and give you a short list of must-try foods in Myanmar.

Transportation - How to Get Around Yangon

Before we jump into Yangon food guide and what to eat in Yangon, there is another thing that we need to discuss first - getting around. Even though, Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar, getting around is easy and convenient.

Walking around Yangon

Walking is the best way to explore the city if you want to infuse yourself with the best vibes that Yangon has to offer. We would advise you to walk around Yangon instead of being stuck in the traffic that tends to get quite hectic during rush hours. All the places listed below and other main attractions in the city will not require you to walk more than 30 minutes. Yangon center and areas around main attractions are very safe and will not make you feel threatened. Of course, common sense applies wherever you go.

Grab or Uber to get around Yangon

Grab or Uber as in most Southeast Asian countries is very affordable. This is a perfect option to take if you find yourself on the other side of the city and it's getting late or the sun is burning your shoulders. Expect to pay around 1000 to 2000 Kyat ($ 0.66 - $ 1.32) for a ride anywhere in the city. The only setback is the occasional traffic jams around the city center.

Public Transport

Public transport in Yangon is one of the cheapest in the region. For example, the best and cheapest option to get to the city center from the airport is by bus. The price is only 500 Kyat ($ 0.30 or € 0.25) and will take you roughly 30-40 minutes depending on the time of the day. Within the city expect to pay from 200-300 Kyat for a one-way ticket. If you are new to Asia than it would be more advisable to stick to Grab Taxi or walking, as the timetables and directions are not really straight forward. However, most of the locals will be more than happy to assist you and show the bus that you need to take to get wherever you are going.

Shan Noodles in Yangon

Location: Aung Mingalar Shan Noodle Shop

Price: 2000 Kyat ($ 1.32 or € 1.18)

If you would've to choose only one dish to eat in Yangon - Shan noodles would be it. They are one of the staples in Myanmar and Aung Mingalar is the place to eat them. Aung Mingalar is an amazing open space restaurant and they serve one of the best Shan noodles in Yangon. Trust us, you will not walk away with an empty stomach or disappointed. Basically, noodles are tossed in tomato and chicken paste with a slight touch of turmeric; mildly spicy and goes perfectly with a dash of garlic and pickles. If noodle soups are not your go-to street food, worry not, they are also served as sticky noodle salad. Mostly all of the Burmese foods will not make a hole in your pocket as one portion costs 2000 Kyat ($ 1.32 or € 1.18).

Mont Lin Ma Yar Yangon Mc Muffins

Location: Old Yay Tar Street (nearby Shwedagon Pagoda)

Price: 10 pieces approximately 400 to 500 Kyat (approx. $ 0.33 or € 0.29)

Mont Lin Ma Yar or direct English translation would be "as a husband and wife" is another must-try food while in Yangon. You can find these quail egg snacks all across Yangon but our favorite street stall was on Old Yay Tar Shay Street close to Shwedagon Pagoda. The main ingredients are a quail egg, chickpeas, spring onions, pepper and a dash of turmeric. We heard that other people compare the taste to Mc Muffins but we were not able to compare the taste to Mc Muffin. Only because we haven't had an Mc Muffin before, haha. Mont Lin Ma Yar would be a typical breakfast snack and an easy grab for the road.

Samosa Salad in Yangon

Location: Maha Bandula Park St. (closer to the Merchant Rd.)

Price: 600 Kyat ($ 0.40 or € 0.35)

This will be one of the first dishes recommended if you will ask the question - what to eat in Yangon. Samosa salad is another Burmese street food staple that you will see everywhere across Myanmar. The best place to try samosa salad in Yangon is close to Sule Pagoda next to the Merchant Road on short plastic seats where you can hide from the burning midday sun and enjoy the local dishes. Samosa salad is fresh samosas cut into short strips and mixed together with fried chickpeas, potato, cabbage, tomato and then topped with a warm savory broth that makes adds that finishing touch to the dish. If you love spicy food as much as we, then be sure to ask for chilly flakes to make it even better.

Burmese Tea in Yangon

Location: Golden Tea

Price: 1500 Kyat ($ 1.00 or € 0.88) - includes tea for two and several snacks

One thing that we noticed right away was that Burmese teahouses in Myanmar provide so much more than warm beverages and snacks. It’s a place where the people (mainly men) of Yangon come to share the daily news, discuss the current political situation in the country or just purely socialize. Although, the tea that you will find in Yangon is mainly tick and strong and extremely infused with condensed milk to call for a sugar overdose. But don't be scared away by it. It's equally balanced and the black tea's flavor takes away the sweet milk and sugar abundance.

Our recommendation would be to try the Golden Tea as it has some of the best tea snacks in Yangon. Snacks will arrive automatically when you order tea. Make sure to try as many snacks as you like as they cost only a few cents and you will pay only for what you eat. Make sure to visit it more than once as they change the snacks daily and stay alert for the delicious spicy meat samosas.

Dosa Sandwich

Location: Maha Bandula Park St. (closer to the Merchant Rd.)

Price: 200 Kyat ($ 0.13 or € 0.12)

Dosa is a traditional Burmese sandwich that locals refer to as the "Gangster sandwich". Actually, it looks like a savory crepe. Classic Dosa is made by wrapping an Indian style pancake around a mix of spring onions, sprouts, chickpeas (as everything in Myanmar is about chickpeas), turmeric, sweet and sour sauce and a dash of chilies that completes the dish. As the majority of Burmese street foods are on the greasy side, Dosa is no exception. Yet again we were blown away of how affordable is street food in Yangon. We paid only 200 Kyat for the sandwich. Make sure to try several of these street foods in the market next to the Sule Pagoda. It offers the widest variety of Burmese cuisine.

Mohinga Fish Soup - The Most Famous Food in Yangon

Location: Myaung Mya Daw Cho

Price: 600 Kyat ($ 0.40 or € 0.35)

Mohinga is a typical Burmese breakfast dish that is served all over Myanmar. We were told that the best Mohinga is served in Yangon on the street close to Shwedagon Pagoda. We chose to taste our first Mohinga in Myaung Mya Daw Cho. The reason for this is; they serve one of the most delicious Mohinga's in the whole country. This rice-noodle stew is served in a mild fish broth, thickened by crushed chickpeas and topped up with turmeric and lemongrass. Actually, this is one of our favorite Burmese dishes. Also, it was the first recommended dish when we asked local Burmese what to eat in Yangon.

At first, we were a bit skeptical about the fish like taste. Once you have the first spoon you will not order anything else in the morning if Mohinga is on the menu. Our tip to you would be to visit a place that serves Mohinga before 9 am. This is the most popular morning dish and usually, they stop serving it by 9 am. Make sure to go to a place which is full of locals as you will be served a good quality Mohinga there; locals know where to eat their Mohinga.
