FOODS
Commercial Betta Food, Blood worms, earthworms

TEMPERATURE
72-76 degrees

WATER QUALITY
PH should be about 7.5. Weekly water changes should keep waste products in check.

WATER CHANGES
Weekly with 50-75% water changed.

COMPATIBLE FISH
I recommend to keep it solitary because smaller more active go after fins and stress out the Betta. Don't add other males to the tank because they will attack each other.

TANK SIZE
Recommended 1 gal or larger. Smaller sizes are more fashionable but are not very healthy.

DISEASES
Common tropical fish diseases. I never had issues with fish disease until I added tropical fish with the Betta.

TANK SETUP
Small heater.
Gravel.
Small plastic plants.
Food.
Thermometer.
Algae pad for tank type.
Gravel vacuum.
Water Conditioner.
Light for night viewing.

COSTS
$30-50+ more for show quality Betta fish.

WARNINGS
Don't leave out heater of water when plugged in. It can overheat.
Don't use any chemicals with cleaning your fishes environment.
Wash hands after cleaning your fish tank.

COOL INFO
Betta fish are air breathing fish. They have a Labyrinth organ which allows them to air breath.
Males build bubble nest for fish fry.

I accept no liability arising from this post

Sort:

Aww nice post, I had a Betta fish once, it was purple, but he got sick of the eye, the eye seemed like it was going to explode. I tried to save him but it was impossible. Yes they are very grumpy fish, I once bought him 2 more fishes (regular fishes) for him not to be alone but I had to take them out to another bowl because he attacked them since I dropped them in his aquarium haha. Very beautiful and grumpy fishes!

Thank you Mari,
I did some research and what you describe is pop eye and can be treated with antibiotic for aquariums.
The disease is caused by bacteria. I had a similar experience. My fish got bloat after introducing mollies to the tank. It looked like all the scales were sticking outward.
