How We Get Around Guadalajara, Contributed by @TangerineTravels

in #biking6 years ago (edited)

We've been in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico for about a month now, I think? I honestly don't remember when we got here. Time seems like a whole new dimension that doesn't really apply here. We've written about other topics regarding Guadalajara but I don't think we've ever touched on the topic of how we get around.

Walking

Up until now, we've walked almost everywhere we've gone. If it's within 30-45 minutes walking distance, we're more than likely going to head out on foot.

That's one thing that has changed a lot for us since coming to Mexico. When living in Phoenix, if a place was 30 minutes walking away, there's no chance I'd walk there. In fact, I would drive to places that were literally across the street. Granted, it was a large street, but still.

Our views on walking have changed so much since coming here. Most of the time, we don't want to pay the $1.75-$5.00 that an Uber would cost, so we just walk there instead.

Bus system/Subway

I'm putting these two things into a single category because they both fall under the umbrella of public transit. We know we can get around at a low cost using these transportation methods but we haven't bothered to figure them out.

Uber

We'll take an Uber under a handful of circumstances: When it's too far to walk, when we're tired, when we're in a hurry, and when we have things to carry (like groceries, for example).

The minimum charge for an Uber in our location at this time seems to be about 32 pesos ($1.63 USD). Our average Uber ride costs 43 pesos ($2.19). And our most expensive ride, which was about 35 minutes all the way across town, was about 120 pesos ($6.12).

Last month, in April, was probably the month in which we took the most Uber rides ever. We ended up spending a little over $40 USD for the month and that was over the course of about 20 rides.

If you would like to see some more accurate numbers regarding our Uber costs, you can check out this video:

Biking

We haven't done much biking yet, but that is about to change! Today, we signed up for this awesome service that they have here in Guadalajara called MiBici (Mi = My, Bici = Bicycle).

For the low price of 365 pesos ($18.63 USD), we can take an unlimited number of 30-minute (or shorter) rides on MiBici bikes for the next year. We don't have to worry about our bike getting stolen, storing the bike, maintenance, nothing. We're even insured in the event of an accident.

Compare that to the cost of a one-day pass or a weekly pass at 80 and 280 pesos, respectively, and you can see just how great of a deal the yearly pass is. It's a little bit more work to obtain, but it is so worth it!

This sign shows the cost of various memberships. For the shorter memberships, you can pay at each bicycle station, but for the yearly membership, you have to sign up online or at the local MiBici office. Today, we went to the MiBici office to ensure that we could start using the service right away.

It would be a less-desirable service if there weren't so many places where you could pick up and drop off a bike. But they are everywhere! As you're walking through our neighborhood, you'll see a bike station every few blocks!

This map shows just how many bike stations there are in Guadalajara. As you can see, every pin on the map indicates a place where you can drop off or pick up a bike. We're super excited about this and we'll be publishing a video about it later today over at @tangerinetravels.

Hahahahha, you are indeed catching fun in Guadalajara.

I'm glad you are learning new habit as a result of your new environment. That is one of the magic changing of environment can do.
You will think you are only saving your expenses for not taking bus or uber, but you are exercising your body as well. You are burning some of the fat stored up in your body. At the end, you come out healthier and stronger. Smile

I love the system of MiBici, it makes cycling so interesting. You can pick up bike and drop it almost anywhere according to the map up there. Who would not want to register with them?

With this kind of service, the money paid is just a bargain.

Now is the time to enjoy your videos about cycling, I know you can disappoint... Smile

Hiya
Burning up which fat?
Haha haha....
You're right actually
That's what new environment comes with, changes you have to adapt to

Yaaaaaaay!. This is such a welcome relief. I am talking about this:

Today, we signed up for this awesome service that they have here in Guadalajara called MiBici (Mi = My, Bici = Bicycle).

I am really excited to see you two do this. Wait...where will you put Laska? Hahahaha.

You have been doing more of walking and watching the Sunday walk, I could see the need for this, even though you enjoyed doing the walking. It gives you better view and relate more, Yes, but you could use this little break. This is really good. You have been working the lower body hahahaha...wait...bike is also the same hahahahaha.

Really excited about this. Looking forward to seeing the update on it.

Gracias Amigos.

You are just a clown o

What do you mean by, they have been working the lower body? 🤔
Funny guy

Hahahaha Juliet...they will understand. Hahaha. Thanks cutie

Time is just something we can't seem to keep track of....it just flies away 😂

Most times, a change in environment teaches us new things.

Like you guys having to trek some distances.

But then, don't you think trekking for over 30 minutes might be so strenuous?

Taking a bus as an alternative is a no-no for me though...

I'd rather trek 😂 or take uber than take a bus...
Lol

I think signing up for the mcbici is such a great idea.
I guess it'll help save some cost.
If only I knew how to ride a bike 🚲

Hehehe
Have fun guys....

Cheers

Learning they say never stop, not until we realized this, that we will absolutely change for better in our life, situation and circumstances make up to get wise sometimes. What I understand in this context is that there will always be a change in our thinking and attitude most especially when we change environment like you did now. Through 30 trek, follow by another cost of taking public transport and biking which will actually save your strength and gives you easy walk around without much stress of catch up on the expensive public transport even before you will get there.
Superb for all those biking station and the fact that insurance as cover you in case of accident or stolen. I'm streaming the video now and like it. I can't wait for more of this video. Keep the good work flowing man, I always respect you with different update on different topic.

Hehehe, very nice update by you, @tangerinetravels

We've been in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico for about a month now, I think? I honestly don't remember when we got here.

"this life is short, and the time is fast, no replay, no rewind, so enjoy every moment ...

Truly o
Life is really very short and you never know it flies so....

That's just the definition, hehehe

@comunitycoin You're really getting presented to better approach forever and culture and your adjustment is very stunning. I'm happy you are adapting new propensity because of your new condition. That is one of the enchantment changing of condition can do.

You will think you are just sparing your costs for not taking transport or uber, but rather you are practicing your body too. You are consuming a portion of the fat stockpiled in your body. Toward the end, you turn out more advantageous and more grounded.

For a second, I thought you were a tri-athlete: biking, walk, ubering(I don't know if this term is actually correct, lol). Anyways, it seems fun to be making such movements in Mexico. Did you by chance stop by any eating places? How was the food? I really envy you man, you get to travel a lot. That's cool.

You are spending so much on uber and and walking 🚶 is like an exercise and still more chance to know some hidden places that may be useful for your videos but shouldn't not be much

I think bicycles 🚲 is gonna pay, it may not reach far but it's still gonna save the money you spend on uber and bus 🚌 or subway costs

You’re actually getting exposed to new way of life and culture and your adaptation is quite amazing. Smiles . Thanks for telling us how things works there . I hope someday I get to explore and actually I’ve got some exploration to do

wow the uber rides are very affordable their they have a bicycle rental stations here in South Florida but it is much more expensive.
