Sexual Dimorphism and Molt to Confuse the Visiting Birder

in #birding6 years ago

I spent the last 8 days staying at the Tropical Regeneration project headquarters (see https://www.tropicalregeneration.org/ ) where a family of Passerini's Tanagers was busy in the bushed near the back porch where I loved to hang out. It took this visiting birder a while to figure out that all of these birds were the same species. Check out these photos.

PATA adult male.JPG
Adult Male. Fortunately this one was easy. The only similar species is not present in the area of Costa Rica I was visiting, so I had little trouble with him.

PATA female.JPG
With the male there too it was not too hard to ID the adult female, or juvenile? of the same species.

Molting male PATA 1.JPG
Most fun though was this molting male. I deduced that it is a male born the year prior, and now undergoing its first full molt. You can tell it's not a juvenile by the extensive wear in the flight feathers that are yet to molt. Look at the very ragged tail feather tips and the nearly completely worn off coverts of the tail feathers. A juvenile undergoing a molt from juvenile into its first basic plumage shortly after fledging would have fresh flight feathers that it will keep until the next summer. I don't think it is an adult male in molt because of the other adult males in bright plumage, though I could be wrong in this deduction. Molt is a lot of fun to begin to understand, and you'll see me post on it from time to time.

Enjoy. Good birding. Steem on!

Female Tanager

This is a great post and lovely photos. I am in Costa Rica and according to my bird book this is a female Tanager and the black and red is the male. Is this incorrect and this is not a female? Thanks for your help.

There are many species of Tanager in Costa Rica. Some have extreme sexual dimorphism, others less so.

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS!!... Did you know that this species is the only living member of the Pandionidae family? They also tend to migrate here, we can observe them in coastal lagoons of eastern Venezuela, especially on the northern coast of my state, Sucre.

This is really nice content with best quality of images. I hope this post will grow on trending my brother.

Nice project my friend.

@birdbanter, It sounding that you are effective Bird explorer. And it always great to understand the nature's creatures for sure.

And Birds are true musicians of nature and their sounds and their communications make an breathtaking environment.

And i personally like birds because, few birds visit our home from some years to create nests.

And literally, in these pictures every bird have different body art and that makes an beautiful effect and in my opinion nature is an great art piece for sure.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

Very nice
