FIGHTING FOR BIRTH AND THE FREEDOM OF IT: PART THREE

in #birth6 years ago

We live in a time where women distrust their own bodies.

Where disturbed birth is what most women expect and accept.

Where women undergo uncomfortable and painful interventions, performed mostly by strangers.

A time when man made hormones are injected into women's bodies if the birth is not moving fast enough for the medical professionals.

I discussed Pitocin in my last post, it is so readily used that I wanted to mention it again and share the opinion of two great birth activist's with you. According to Dr Sarah Buckley , pitocin can cause hyperstimulation of the uterus and can have adverse effects on the fetus, such as reduced blood flow. And birth activist, Doris Haire, has stated that it is comparable to

“holding an infant under the surface of the water, allowing the infant to come to the surface to gasp for air, but not to breathe.”

How many women are aware of this fact? Why is this still being used in hospitals. The answer is simple because of the trust that people have in the medical profession, believing that they have our best interests at heart. But Pitocin is used to speed up contractions, and as the mother is no longer birthing naturally her cervix is not dilating as it would in an undisturbed birth. The professionals see the birth as not progressing and with the baby showing signs of distress due to the Pitocin the mother to be, can end up having a cesarean. All this with them having our best interests at heart.

I know that Cesarean's have saved lives and that their is a time and a place for them being performed especially when their is a huge risk to the mother and baby, but how many of these risks could have been avoided if the cascade of interventions prior to it had not taken place. According to Harper MA et Al who published in the Obstetrics & Gynecology journals

Cesarean surgery involves major abdominal surgery and increases the risk of maternal death overall by about 4 times and, for elective surgery on a healthy mother and baby by around three times'.

On top of that babies born via cesarean miss out on the microbes that are in the mother’s vaginal fluids, these microbes are essential in building up our immune system.

'Imbalances in the human microbiome have been linked to a host of chronic, non-communicable diseases, including autoimmune and allergic disorders, vascular disease, obesity, and some mental disorders and cancers.'

Epidurals when used interfere with all the major hormones needed during birth, reducing the production of oxytocin and stopping altogether the peek needed to birth your baby at the end. The drugs used enter the mothers blood stream almost immediately and from there go straight to the baby. What takes the mother 2 and a half hours to eliminate from her body takes the baby 8 hours.
Beta-endorphin is another hormone produced in birth which is used to transend pain. It helps the mother get into an altered state to connect with her primal brain and in turn work instinctively with her body and her baby. This is when a mother can move around and use sound to aid her, but epidurals greatly reduce the production of Beta-endorphin.

Obstetrics ignores the power of birth, the power of hormones and emotions.

Ignores the mother and babies instinctive nature during birth.

Mothers should be in their full power.

Babies should be born in love.

Very informative post. The pains of childbirth are unbearable for some hence most settle for an epidural, I myself did the same due to long hours of labor. I just didn't know the benefit outweigh the risks.

Thank you @luvabi for taking the time to read and reply. It really should be the mothers choice in the end, it's just important that it is an informed choice.

Great post Aishlinn,

Your passion for this subject shows in your words.

Bless.

thank you Mark, I'm glad that it shows. I feel lucky to have had 3 different births which I have learnt so much from and has led me on this path to advocate natural birth and empower women.

Beautiful, Mama. I have been so blessed to have 4 amazing, powerful, drug-free water births at home. With my third, my placenta retained. After about an hour, we decided that we would try a shot of pitocin to try to loosen it up. The cramping from that stuff was horrible. It's terrible, nasty shit. Can't imagine doing actual labor with it.
Thanks for raising awareness about this important issue. I included it in the first article I wrote about smashing the patriarchy. Unnecessary birth intervention is a very basic violation of a woman's - and a baby's - body. And it's very much a patriarchal power play.

Thank you @solarsupermama, I'm trying to get all of information out there so that no matter where a mother decides to have her baby she knows what to expect and also can make informed decisions. Congrats on your 4 homebirths. And I agree it is very much patriarchal power play x. Hope you're having a great start to 2018 x
