Lightning Network in action

This guy made a coke vending machine that uses the Lightning Network to process BTC payments. He’s even put instructions online.

So if anyone asks you what you can actually buy with bitcoin – you now have an answer that doesn’t involve purchasing meth on the darkweb. Which incidentally we do not recommend you ever do. As a self-respecting bitcoiner we expect higher standards than that from you. Coke at the very least.

And as it happens, that’s exactly what this new Lightning Network-powered vending machine sells, coke. Not the same kind of coke; insufflate this one and the lining of your nose will not thank you. But still an outstanding piece of work. Check out the video. It’s not exactly a conventional vending machine, but it’s still incredibly cool!

The idea was to build a proof of concept, and Spanish crypto-lover Ricardo Reis has done just that. By using the Lightning Network for payments, he avoids the transaction fees and delays that would make using Bitcoin’s main chain unsuitable – fees alone could add 10% to the price of a can of coke.

If you know your way around a Raspberry Pi and some other minor hardware, plus can make sense of Spanish (Google Translate counts), then there are instructions available for your own experimentation. Enjoy!
