1.50 in bitcoin ... Worth nothing?

Seems that i have $1.50 in bitcoin in a wallet but after the miner sending fees it has no worth according to the wallet. I take it that i cannot send it to myself but a different wallet can accept 58 cents on my behalf. I am having a little trouble understanding this concept. I think there is a trading thing attached to the wallet I am not sure if there is a different coin that makes this better. Hardly seems worthwhile if the fee is so high.
