Bitcoin Mining!
So, my bf recently placed out the idea that he wanted to start mining for bitcoins. He has a pretty decent PC set-up but he suggested that he needed to "upgrade" a little his equipment for better mining performance. Now, I have lurking around the idea to mine myself but my 2010 macbook will not do the job efficiently. What I want to know is, what is the best hardware/software equipment for this task? He's already up to a few microbits but would like to have a little more info about how to do better/faster.
Is it an expensive "job/hobby"?

There are specific mining hardwares. Just like Bitmain's ASIC. However, I doubt you'll have more hash power than mining farms.
You could buy 1000 of them, move to China or Paraguay, for cheap energy.....
You can allways go for a mining pool thought.... Or maybe, mine some other coins.... Dash has a nice reward, not only for miners, but also for full nodes.
Tell him it's too late to mine for bitcoin as the money you would pay for electricity alone will cause a huge net loss. If the electricity is free, then he would also need dedicated hardware, meaning something that was created for the sole purpose of mining bitcoin (ASIC mining). Your next best option would be some other crypto-currency. Ethereum is still possible, though won't be for long due to proof of stake. Litecoin, Dash, and XMR are possible too. Please look into mining as there are many estimator/calculator websites out there for you to gauge your profit margin.
CPU/GPU mining died in 2013. Just not possible anymore. You can try to mine altcoins and sell for bitcoins but that's about it.
