Haiti incorporates Blockchain in its agricultural development policy

After India has set up a Blockchain platform dedicated to its coffee supply chain, Haiti through its Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI) is currently planning to use Blockchain technology to improve its machines farm.

Ensure the transparency of the origins of the product

This significant step forward is part of the Business Development and Investment Project (PDAI), initiated in 2013 and supported by the World Bank.

For the first pilot phase of the project, the mango, avocado and pineapple sectors of the departments of Artibonite and Nippes will be highlighted.

Following a call for tenders from fintech companies, the startup AgriLedger was chosen to try the Blockchain, which would facilitate payments and traceability of fresh fruit value chains.

Michel Ange Pantal, the PDAI Project Manager, attests that the Blockchain will guarantee buyers the expected quality of the products.

In addition, they will be able to verify the identity of the producer as well as the origin of the product via a GPS location.

Guarantee the right price

In addition to ensuring product quality, Blockchain will also help Haitian farmers find the best possible price for their products.

Price will be determined by supply and demand in the market and not by bargaining power.

Geneviève Léveillé, the CEO of AgriLedger, mentioned that the current centralized systems could not work because of the multitude of actors working in the agricultural sector.

As a result, MCI plans to subsidize the training and technical assistance of future members of the decentralized system to promote the export of fresh fruit, clothing and processed products to the United States.
