I am the proud owner of a new niche at Narrative.org! (Brief overview/resources for Narrative.org)

YAY!

That took a long time. But it's done.

I've just secured the niche "VOLUNTARYISM" over on NARRATIVE. For those that don't know, Narrative is a new blockchain-based social media such much like Steemit. It has yet to launch, but that will be coming soon. They've already got some innovative ideas and protocol in place for giving individual users more power over which content is rewarded, and customizing/creating their own communities.

So what benefits does owning a niche entail? This video gives a brief overview.

THE PROCESS

  1. Suggest a niche
  2. If approved, place a bid on the niche
  3. Make the NRVE payment to complete the process.

The above steps, while seemingly simple, actually took me about a week to accomplish, all told, as I had to wait on community approval, trade some BTC for NEO tokens, and then exchange the NEO tokens for NRVE, the currency to be used on Narrative.

Pros and cons, and remaining questions.

Though the beta version of Narrative is not set to be released until later this year, they already seem to have their "shit together" in many ways, and the organization of the platform and community is impressive. Everything is very transparent so far, and meticulously and cleanly organized. Compared to Steemit, the "infrastructure" that Narrative has in place for community building and quality control seems superior to me at this point. Various niches have owners and moderators assigned to quality/abuse control, and can be voted in or out by other community members. Owners and moderators are incentivized to keep their niches high quality, as the more popular the niche becomes, the more rewards they can receive.

So far the potential downside I am seeing/predicting is a bit too much control from the centralized management of the website/platform itself. It seems like this place is going to be a little less "Wild West" than Steemit, which, to be fair, may be a good thing, but I tend to prefer maximum freedom and as little centralized interference as possible. Why do I have this gut feeling about over regulation? Well, in signing up for the Narrative community (a separate but officially connected website) the user agreement made stipulations for legal reasons that seemed a bit constrictive to me:

  • No writing about or advertising ICOs
  • No requests for crypto donations
  • No unlicensed use of copyrighted material
  • Admonitions to basically "be nice" to other community members (who defines what "abuse" is?)

Granted, I understand why all these stipulations exist, especially where the Telegram branch of the community is concerned, but I wonder if these stipulations will also apply to the beta release of the platform itself. Who knows.

All in all, however, the platform and concept look strong, and I am excited to be a part of it!

ONE QUESTION I DO HAVE, FOR ANYONE ON THE PLATFORM, IS HOW TO BECOME A MODERATOR OF A SPECIFIC NICHE. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks for reading, and see you on Narrative! If you need any help/have any questions about suggesting your own niche and securing NRVE tokens to bid on it, feel free to contact me (Graham Smith) in the Voluntary Japan Discord Server.

Greeeeeat! I'm just waiting on the list to acced... Hope see you there and maybe collaborate with your niche! Congrats!

Sounds great! The rounds end pretty quickly, so yeah. See you there, and look forward to working together.

Congrats on starting the niche there on narrative but as i'm sure you're aware, steemit has many blockchain competitors. I did read your pros and cons.

Long term, do you think steem will be worth more than it's competitors? In terms of what it is.... like how are all these other competitors really so much different than steemit?

To me it's akin to creating another facebook..... hows it really all that different?

Hope my question makes senses . As far as being a niche "owner"... sounds nice but there would end up being thousands (or more) "niches" for something like art, or gaming for example....

For sure. Tons of competition out there and no guarantees. A lot of other platforms are trying to improve/adapt Steemit’s model, and I think that’s a good thing.

Whereas Facebook is long established and mega popular, I don’t necessarily see Steemit that way. I love Steemit, and hope it grows and counties to be successful, but it’s always good to diversify, especially when sites like SCORUM (Steemit for sports, basically), Narrative, and BitTube are really pushing forward with unique ideas and high quality sites that are very user friendly.

Yes, there are many niches, but it’s like it is here, some are very popular, and some are not. All up to the attention market. The owner of a popular niche like “sports” might do great, where as the owner of, say, “Tachibana” might not. Who knows.

I dunno. Steemit has changed my life, but it’s definity not gonna be the last major blockchain-based social media site, in my view.

I’m loving that there is competition now. Hope it is a wake up to some of those a bit too comfortable with milking the system here...

I want to branch out as well and steemit is great but full of flaws. Just a few weeks ago i flagged some blatant spam of a -1 rep user. Little did i know they had 35000 SP so they went and flaggged all my recent posts to zero.

After some back and forth they removed all but one flag.

Steemit really doesn't have anything in place to stop corrupt behavior like this so I doubt steemit will be my only blockchain venture either.

Just don't know where to start.
And for people like me, I don't have one niche i blog about running, art, psychology, the unexplained, social issues etc. So a niche based site wouldn't work for me

I don’t have one niche either. Narrative has hundreds. Writers are not limited to one. I blog on SCORUM, too, just keeping a running blog there.

Sorry to hear about the power abuse that hit you. It is a real pain in the ass here, in that regard, for sure.

Thanks yeah the power abuse is an issue.
Thanks for clarifying about narrative

That's great news, dude. Congrats. Also, you voice some similar concerns I have about the Narrative platform. But I'll still give it a shot and see what happens. It'll be an interesting experiment, regardless.

Congratulations on that! I don't remember who, but someone once told me, being a niche owner on Narrative is like being a B&B owner.

Thank you! I certainly hope so. That sounds nice!

Thanks for the insightful post!

Do you try to use unique blogposts for your multiple blogs like Narrative and SCORUM or do you reuse posts from your other sites to reach a broader audience with just one post? I know of some bloggers that try to vary their voice over multiple platforms and others who do their best to present a consistent voice and content over all platforms. What is your preferred method and why?

Thanks!

Somewhere in the middle, I guess. I don't like to the blanket copy/paste, multi-platform approach, but also don't make sure the content is different on each of the platforms I blog on, either. Actually, Narrative hasn't even really started yet. I still follow the above approach though for YouTube, Twitter, Patreon, and Steemit.

Congratulations bro

This is what I mean, two posts in a row. I am going to have to flag the next one. Please stop.

congrats!
still underatand nothing how it works, but I hope you'll develop your niche soon and tell me more;)
