Why encryption of instant messaging is so important and its relationship with the blockchain

in #blockchain6 years ago (edited)

These days in certain publication media are coming news of a turn of the screw over security and encryption of the messages of instant messaging applications used by millions of people.

Signal:

Signal messaging application plans to implement a new function that aims to hide the identity of the sender of possible attackers that intercept the communication.
For some time, messaging applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram among others have implemented encryption in communication, but these encrypted packages contained and contain small doses of information that could allow knowing the agents involved in the communication and the time of the messages. Here we have a comparison on the encryption in the communication of the different applications.

  1. WhatsApp: the WhatsApp application bases its encryption on the Signal protocol.
  2. Telegram: the Telegram application bases its encryption on the MTProto protocol.
  3. Signal: AES for each conversation and is based on OTR with modifications including now "Sealed Sender".

In the case of Signal, the application encrypts the message using its usual protocol, in this message the sender's certificate is included and everything is packaged. This package is encrypted and sent together with a delivery token that the recipient finally decrypts message after validating the sender's identity key.
It must be taken into account that Signal's new technique eliminates the company's ability to verify (by itself) the sender's certificate, although the company is already introducing alternative solutions that allow users to verify who sent them a certain message. This new feature is in beta, so users who have this version can try it.

Jan Koum, co-founder of WhatsApp, to explain the draft of the measure.

"For me, it's a personal matter," explains the Ukrainian entrepreneur. "I was born in the middle of the USSR, under communist governments, and the fact that I could not speak with freedom was one of the reasons why my family emigrated to the United States"

It should also be remembered that encryption not only affects messages, but also telephone calls made from the messaging application, which follow the same principle and which nobody, not even the intelligence services, will be able to listen to.

Does this sound like decentralization and anonymity of the blockchain?

Thanks for your support !

I love signal so far. Been using it a couple months, though not the calling function. So smooth and easy, just as easy as any messaging app I've used.

Another one that I just started using is the messenger on Minds, a social media platform similar to Facebook, but on the ethereum blockchain. Their messenger uses sha256 encryption, which I must admit I know nothing about lol

I'm new to this space, and trying to expand my own personal day-to-day privacy.

Thanks for all this info I will try Minds. Trying yo "expand" too. Welcome. I will keep you in my mind.
