World Cup 2018: Croatia Win a penalty shootout with russia
Hello everyone, steemit sports lovers Croatia beat Russia in a penalty shootout in the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals at Fisht Stadium on Sunday 8 July 2018. They won 4-3 on penalties after extra time playing 2-2.
Ivan Rakitic sealed Croatia's victory after scoring a penalty as the last penalty taker. He sent Croatia into the semi-finals to face England. He also ended Russia's extraordinary performance, the lowest ranked host (70) in this tournament.
Kick Fyodor Smolov as the first Russian penalty executor was thwarted by Danijel Subasic. Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was then able to save his goal from Mateo Kovacic's kick. But the home side's fate was locked after Mario Fernandes scored from their third attempt.
In the regular round, Denis Cheryshev brought Russia ahead with a long-range hard kick in the 31st minute. Andrej Kramaric led Croatia leveled six minutes before halftime.
Croatia then turned with Domagoj Vida's beautiful header in the 101st minute. Russia equalized through Mario Fernandes in the 115th minute.
Despite being knocked out, Russia has surpassed expectations by speeding into the last eight rounds, among them by conquering Spain.
