Yummy Tummy #1 : Ramadan Delicacies in India!

in #blog6 years ago

Hello Steemians!

Like they say... People who love to eat are always the best people :) I do love to eat and I love tasting different food and cuisines everywhere I go. So I thought of starting this food series called Yummy Tummy that will showcase all the pictures from my travel and the mouth-watering recipes I have had the privilege to taste. The first blog in this series is gonna be about the food during the month of Ramzan/Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. During this month, observers of Islam fast from sunrise to sunset. During the fast, no food or drink is consumed, and thoughts must be kept pure. Followers of Islam believe that fasting teaches or helps them be more spiritual patient and modest. Meals are served before sunrise, called Suhoor(usually packed with power foods like fava beans, dates, potatoes or yogurt) and after sunset, which is the Iftar that is eaten with family or with the local community.

Around 1.6 billion Muslims around the world fast. During this month, many food bazaars pop up all around in every big city and small town. After an entire day of fasting, everyone indulges in a variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies. The hustle and bustle in each of these markets is something that can only be experienced in person.

I met up with my friends @godwinronnie @tamaramariadavey and @shaunreneaux and went around savouring these delicacies.

A traditional Iftar spread is a gastronomic extravaganza, from meat curries, desserts, refreshing sherbets and a lot more. A traditional Iftar menu can be described as nothing short of spectacular with the most famous dishes being the haleem, kebabs, biryani, paya, halwa, khurma and phirni.

Regardless of your religion and preferences, enjoy the pious feast of Iftar at your neighbour’s place or the local market. Or better still, whip up some delicacies at your house.
