Han Market Da Nang: Outrageously Cheap Shopping in Vietnam

in #blog5 years ago (edited)

Shopping in Vietnam for "brand name" clothing will cost you between $1-4 USD. If you're looking for things to do in Vietnam, Han Market should be on your list.

Headed to Vietnam? If so, your first or last stop should be in Da Nang! At Han Market, you can get designer clothing at 90% off the retail price in the United States. Most of the clothes were sold between $1-$4 USD without having to negotiate. Many of the shops had prices displayed so you didn’t have to play the “negotiate the price” game.

Buying Clothes In Da Nang, Vietnam

I went through 6 shirts in 3 days. It’s hot and humid in Vietnam. You will sweat a lot! To stay cool, I'd try to remember how it felt to be cold like at the underground amusement park Salina Turda. and when I was freezing at the top of Mt. Fuji (sort of).

A friend recommended picking up some dry-fit shirts so I’m not just walking around in my sweat soaked shirt all day. That’s when I found Han Market!

Prices In Vietnam's Han Market:

  • T-Shirts: 40k VND
  • Dry-fit Shirts: 70k VND
  • Dri-fit Shorts: 100k VND
  • Dry-fit Pants: 150k VND
  • Traditional Chinese Shirt: 200k VND
  • Dresses: 100-140k VND
  • Traditional Vietnamese Dress: 290k VND

Da Nang Shopping Mall: Han Market

Han Market should be your first stop in Vietnam if you’re planning on not bringing much clothes and luggage, since you can buy everything you need at Han Market DaNang for super cheap. They have shoes, hats, watches, jewelry, toys, souvenirs all types of clothes for men/women, fabric shops, custom tailors and food stalls and a local market!

If you’re planning on doing a lot of shopping in DaNang, this should be your last stop in Vietnam so you don’t have to carry your purchases with you as you travel around Vietnam.

How To Negotiate Prices In Vietnam?

The prices in Vietnam's Han Market was very transparent. They would have signs for the prices and those prices would be consistent among other shops carrying the same or similar goods. Prices for clothing ranged from $2-3 USD. At prices that low, I wouldn’t bother negotiating since that would just come out of seller’s commission. That $1 USD means a lot more in Vietnam than it does in the United States.

BUT! You may run into some vendors where the price is not transparent. If the price is seems unreasonable, definitely negotiate. When negotiating, offer 30% of what they are asking and try to fish for their lowest price. Even if they come to a low price, still don't buy it. Since a lot of the places sell similar goods, try that tactic at a few more places. That should give you a sense of what the going rate for the item is so you can come to a fair price.

Han Market Da Nang Clothing Quality?

It can be hit or miss. You can inspect your items before purchasing them, I did not.

I bought 7 articles of clothing and 3 were of poor quality. There were many loose threads and poor stitching. The other items I bought were in PERFECT condition. It was of quality I’d expect at a retail store.

Four of the shirts I bought at the Da Nang Shopping Mall were Nike Dri-Fit shirts for 70k VND ($3.02 USD). That same shirts goes for $35 at the Official Nike Store and $30 on Amazon! From those 4 shirts I bought, 3 were in perfect condition. Even if only 1 shirt was good, that’s still less than half of what I would have paid in the US.

Brand Name Shopping In Da Nang Real?

Definitely. Some of the items I bought were at the same quality of a legitimate store. Big brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour have their clothing manufactured in Vietnam due to the low costs. It wouldn’t be surprising if items disappeared from the factory and appeared at Han Market.

The few low quality items I bought were probably from the factory’s rejected pile.

Shopping In Vietnam At Other Markets

I saw a Chinese style shirt with a gold dragon on it, so of course I bought it. It was 200k VND ($8.61 USD). Since I was on my way to the airport, I just wore that shirt.

My flight on Viet Jet to Hanoi ended up being delayed so I walked around the airport. I found a clothing shop that sold the exact same shirt I was wearing with a sticker price of 600k VND ($25.82 USD). As you can see by the photo, I’m very happy about my purchase.

Da Nang Clothing Sale Is CASH ONLY

From what I could tell, everything was cash only. You’ll see that throughout most places in Vietnam. If you need some cash, there is an ATM directly across the street from Han Da Nang Market. You’ll find a few more ATM’s in just about any direction from Han shopping mall DaNang.

Shopping In Da Nang Is Worth The Trip

Personally, I rarely do any shopping. But I was surprised by the quality and the prices while shopping in Da Nang at Han Market. I initially came to Vietnam with just one backpack not planning on buying anything. I left with full backpacks.

Prices in Vietnam are generally very low when it came to shopping, food and getting around. So if you go to Vietnam for shopping then that's well worth the trip.

Hello @blorg! This Han Market you're blogging about looks like a cool place at first. Who wouldn't want cheaper clothes, especially if those are of good quality? However, the place looks a bit crowded compared to what I'm used to. I guess with a lot of patience and a few free hours to look around and check out everything, it could work.
On the other hand, it's not a good thing to businesses like Nike and the others if you can buy these brand clothes. I don't think it's fair, it undermines the business but I guess no one cares, otherwise it won't be happening.
Anyway, it's good to see you got some clothes at a reasonable price. I guess I would have bought some myself.

LOL I think Nike has enough money. They make all their profit from outsourcing work to low cost labor countries and have 90%+ margins on the products they sell. It's a very considerate POV from you though, thanks for the comment!

I know Nike has enough money but that doesn't mean they have to be cheated :) The government on the other hand is responsible of letting big and famous companies hire labor for nothing. :)

Man, i had to stop the video after a couple of minutes.
I almost cry at such abundance.
I understand all the issues around outsourcing and how cheap labor has made mega corporation avoid all kinds of responsibilities, etc. But I guess it is up to every country whether they allow these companies to operate under certain liberties.
On the bright side, to see a country like Vietnam, about which I recently watched a long documentary by Ken Burns that show the devastation during the 2-decade war, to look so prosperous is just amazing.
And to think that communist around the world, keep feeding the anti capitalist agenda as if communism or socialism (of the radical type they propose) has brought any sense of goodness somewhere.
I am awed at how an economy can provide people with such abundance at such low prices.
We are as far from that as you can imagine (a pair of shoes costing here 4 times what you earn in amonth).
I guess the silver line here is the fact that if Vietnam was able to go from the devastation of the war to this, then any other country should be able to do the same.
Time will tell
Thanks for all the details of your trip. WONDERFUL WORK

Thanks for the insight and encouragement! That's true, the low pricing is a part of their economic development. Prices used to be just as low in China and it became a super wealthy over the past few decades. Now China outsources to countries in Africa with even lower labor rates and buying out new trade routes. Vietnam is still developing a lot so go check it out before it changes too much. Thanks for checking this out!

hi @blorg
a really interesting post for travelers, even if you are not keen on shopping! it would be nice in every trip to be able to leave light and buy everything you need directly at your destination. We are still fighting with backpacks, always too full !!
What itinerary did you follow in Vietnam? how long did you stay? is one of the goals we have planned for next year. Do you know the best season to go there?
Congratulations and thank you for sharing with us!

Thanks! No real itinerary, just a few loose ideas. I was in Da Nang for 4 nights and Hanoi for 4 nights. I was there at the beginning of this month and they said it was the low travel season. Hotels were cheap and places weren't crowded with tourists. Summer can be brutally hot in Da Nang.

As for itineraries, the highlights are Ba Na Hills Theme Park(Golden Bridge- AKA "Hands of God Bridge"), My Son (kind of like Siem Reap's temples but much smaller, Hoi An (only go at night for the lantern-lit streets), and Hue. I'll have a few more posts and tips for Vietnam in the next few weeks! Thanks for the support!

really nice, thanks! I know we're waiting for the next posts to hear your suggestions!

Thank you for this introduction and analyses of Han Market Da Nang. Seeing the video it is horrible overwhelming the number of items and the size of market. I can't believe that people do any profit. There are more items they people who wants to buy.

Seeing those little defects in clothes that you showed it is sometimes frustrating if you have not noticed before and then later at home it is surprise. I remember the moment like that but it was in 80's when my mother brought a couple of T-shirts from China very cheap and when we looked closely the buttons were glued and not stitched so it was a disaster :)

Whoaa sorry that's a pretty bad experience! I've never seen anything as bad as glued buttons. The price is so low that even if 50% of the items I bought were defective, it was still a good deal. But now I know to take the time to open up items and examine them closely!

That is really frustrating to have such discovery. I can imagine that after that people swear never again to shop there, but often we just forget with time and find us again in such huge market place :)

LOL the price is too attractive. It's worth a few losses to find a few gems.

Love these markets, went to one in malayasia got some epic shoes for rates that are almost minimal for them, these kind of markets are a norm across asia especially and you can get cool items for great prices from them

It's always a lovely honour to sit at a place and see yourself moving all over the world through blogs.. Lol

Now I am at home but am in a different country in your blog..... Isn't it lovely. But come to think of it what at all am I buying since everything in there are awesome.

What a lovely market place you have in there, and yes I really enjoyed every second on your blog. Your pictures on the other hand made the blog great. Great work and keep the review spirit up

Thanks for the support! I'm glad you enjoyed the experience and I'll be sharing more!

The pleasure is always yours since you gave in your all. Will be waiting for them then

It looks like a huge place to buy things at discounted rates. We have similar kind of shops in India too and I think they are in every other country in asia. They sell things that are usually discarded as defective. So they get them at much lower prices. That's why many of their products are not very good in quality, as you mentioned above. Most of them have negligible issues which are not much noticeable, while some have major defects as well.

Thanks for sharing about it. I'll definitely visit it if I ever visit Vietnam and will also keep your advice in my mind. Have a good day! :)

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense rather than throwing an item away. Of course the vendor won't explain that part but I get it, everyone's trying to make some money so I respect the hustle!
