RE: Living with a Chronic Illness - Chronic Depression

in #blog6 years ago

@didic, sorry to hear you're in this boat too. Love that phrase, "little sibling" - and ditto the hopes for the good times to last longer, and strength to endure the darker times. This boat ride seems harder to handle when cruise liners go steaming by, full speed ahead, and I tread water to stay afloat. "We're all in this together," we hear, yet it's easy to feel utterly alone, and harder to feel connected.

There's an animated history show called "Once Upon A Time... Man" which aired on PBS in the States, so you may be familiar with it. It aired here for years. It had to antagonists throughout history: A big, nasty bully, and a small, pestering redheaded sidekick. I've long imagined depression and anxiety personified as those two:

That seems oddly apt. Though I think many people would describe depression as the weasely dude too, constantly whispering discouragements to you.

The loneliness that keeps us from sharing and connecting is one of the most vicious aspects of the sickness, and which allows it to run rampant. And yet, knowing it is so does not always prove sufficient protection against it.
