Started as a men's button down but ended as a crop top

(Finished product)
This short sleeve button down was going in the pile to donate but when I had the chance to touch it and get a feel for the fabric, I couldn't just let it go!
Perfect for the hot and humid summers we have here in Houston, TX I thought turning this into a crop top would be excellent since the material breathes/ hangs on the body SO WELL.

(Before I got started adjusting)
Love the idea of repurposing clothes that go to donation because I truly feel like there is so much waste going out and people are buying to replace what they donate that there is a surplus of clothing waste that is just left to sit in goodwill's or straight to the trash.
Here is what I did to up cycle this shirt!

  1. To start off, I tried on the shirt and marked on the bottom with fabric chalk the point where I thought the crop would be ideal.
Be sure to leave enough for seam allowance! It's better to leave it too long at first, try it on again and trim off in case you think it is still to long.
  2. Next I hemmed the bottom but make sure you first hem with the intention of leaving the hemline wide enough to loop an elastic band through. I used about an 1 inch in width band. Second make sure you don't hem all the way around so that there is a hole big enough to loop the elastic through. Also remember that elastic constricts naturally so when you measure around the part of your body the shirt will be cropped for to leave a couple centimeters extra so you aren't going to suffocate. Looping is also so much easier if you attach a safety pin to one end while holding the other end out of the hole so that you can sew the two ends together once fully looped. Once the elastic is looped you can then close off the hemline.
  3. With the sleeves I didn't cut them at all but I did add elastic banding to them! Similar to the bottom, hem with enough room for the elastic, and again DON'T completely close off the hem just yet. Measure how much elastic you need to wrap around your arms, AGAIN MAKE SURE TO LEAVE A LITTLE EXTRA ELASTIC. Cannot stress this enough, and I'm telling you from my own mistake because I measured exactly what my arm width was initially and it ended up cutting off circulation to my arm lol. Needless to say I had to undo my stitching and cut another piece of elastic that was longer. Loop through and close off the hem and taaa daaaa! You are done :)

I also saved the bottom half of this shirt that I cut off to repurpose that fabric and I took off the extra buttons for any future projects!
    Nothing going to waste here!
Thank you so much for reading🙏 and much love to you all!
see you with the next project :)

Great concept for you to repurpose your shirt, it would be very difficult for me to make this kind of adjustment on my own lol.

Thank you so much! 😄 Really appreciate the support! Anyone could do it really, youtube videos just make it look too easy haha

Wow!! This is so cute. I love how it sits so pretty on your body. Repurposing the shirt was definitely a great idea...

The shirt seemed to have a floral design on the inside, which I think is cool... I wonder why they decided to put it there tho... Lol!

I love how easy making this was and how cute it turned out to be. Definitely one I wouldn't mind wearing.

Repurposing is such a great way of reducing waste, glad to hear that you are doing your part in that. It has actually inspired me to get in the habit of repurposing...

Thank you so much for reading love! 🤗I honestly thought the same thing when I saw that floral pattern inside haha I wish the pocket would have been made at least out of that same print!
Couldn't agree more and if you do actually get started on repurposing things I would love to check them out 😃

Great idea @destinydeanda 😉 to repurpose an old shirt 😉 with simply creative ..you have a brand new design by yourself now and it is pretty nice on yours too... congratulstions😉

Thanks for sharing anyway.. we really need to repurpose something instead of buying a new one and add more waste to the world!

Thank you so much for reading! ☺️really appreciate the kind comment!
Also yesss!! couldn't agree more and it's so much fun to be able to get creative with the things I wear 💃

Hi, I wanted to comment on your post when you made it but forgot about it.

Do you know #needleworkmonday? It's a community of people who love needlework - knitting, crocheting, sewing, cross stitch... every craft where a needle is involved is welcome. Each Monday we show each other (and the world) what we are working on, what we plan to do or what project just has been finished.

We share our love and passion for the needle arts - and it doesn't have to be a lot of text, our works can talk for us! Thought the more details about your project you give (like with this sewing project) the higher the chance that it is chosen as one of the projects highlighted in the weekly showcase report of the @needleworkmonday community account. Why don't you take a look the next time it's #needleworkmonday again?

If you use the tag #needlework on other days than Mondays your posts will be seen by those interested in it :)

Congratulations @destinydeanda! You received a personal award!
