Auto bots, does it really improve your Steemit experience?
Looking at how the Steem blockchain has progress over the past 2 years, I must say that it is one of the most elaborate social experiment that is being conducted across continents. It is no longer restricted to contents about cryptocurrency & blockchain development. The reward system has attracted users from centralized social media network and venture to the decentralized nature of Steem.
The congregation of smart people has produced tools that makes our interaction to the blockchain easier and more efficient. These tools are coded to put an end to the issues that we encounter and to attempt optimized the way we navigate through the network.
One the tools developed within the block is the "Auto bots" - these are the scripts or tools that allow a Steemit account to automaticaly interact to the blockchain with the owner's one-time permission. It's powerful enough that I works automously with a given set of instruction that was set by the owner. The automation will not stop until the owner revoke the permission or the developer stop the service.
What are the actions that an "Auto bot" can do? As I write this post, there are more features that is being added, so I will simply talk about the most common features, these are: Auto Vote, Curation trail, & Claim Rewards.
1. Auto Vote
This tool will allow the bot to control a Steem account to upvote a post based on the set of instructions mandated by the Steem account's owner. The main features are recipient account, voting wieght, & voting time. Below is a screenshot of Steemauto's interface, one of the first services that emerge in Steem blockchain.
2. Curation Trail
In the same manner, the bot will be in control of your Steem account to upvote based on what a "curation trail" will upvote. The trail will be lead by another Steem account that mostly initiated by a community or curation group. Similar to Auto vote, the owner is able to formulate a set of instruction which are: curation trail to follow, voting time, & vote percentage of the curation trail's vote weight. 3. Claim Rewards
Among all the automated features, the claim rewards is the simplest. Basically, the Steem account owner is giving a permission to a bot to control the account and instruct it to claim the pending rewards at a certain period of time in a day. As far as I can comprehend, the auto bots is a good idea for Steemit users that are unable to keep track on the posts of other authors that they support.
In a similar case, a Steemit user that is following a credible curation trail will rest assured that the upvote will go to content creators that meet the quality guideline of the community or a curator that lead the trail. Since content discover-ability is not fully integrated to the experience yet & scouting of posts through the Steemit page is not really convenient at the moment. The reliance to quality content curators is much revered by someone who wish to support the good authors.
Similar to any kind of improvement to the blockchain, there is also a downside effect that was brought by this automation feature.
Firstly, it contributes to the lack of engagement within the network. Since the curation of an account is mostly automated, there isn't any need to personally assess the content itself.
For content creators that are only here for the earnings, then it should be fine since the curation trail's reward then that's ok. on the other hand, there are content creators who are also expecting to receive some feedback from the community and possibly share their insights to one another.
Like in any other good things that we can have, there will always be a downside to it. Even so, I still think that there is more good to it than its bad side, especially when done right and the auto vote / trail account has a goal of improving the curation / reward system for the platform.
