Is the doctor's outfit controversial? [Part 1][EN]

in #blog5 years ago (edited)

Hello steemians friends in this opportunity I will talk about the controversy that exists regarding how the doctor should dress. I had already done this post in Spanish but I feel it is a very important issue and should reach more people.

We are used to seeing the doctor with his long white coat, stethoscope or neck, long-sleeved shirt, tie and in case of ladies wear tall and maybe open shoes, but is this correct? Well, many studies suggest that it is not.

the first of which I will talk to you is the stethoscope, we are used to using it on the neck, because for most it is easier to take it there, I personally have never liked to use it there for the simple fact that it makes my back hurt despite that the one I own is particularly lighter than the rest.

It has been shown that using it on the neck makes it more prone to be contaminated with bacteria that are in the hospital environment, about a year ago I was in a paper where they gave the numbers of a microbiological study of the stethoscopes of some doctors of the hospital in which I develop as a student, and were alarming most were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptoccocus spp both multi-resistant.

It is advisable to use the stethoscope inside the pockets of the uniform and wash them with antiseptics regularly.

Ties

The same goes for neckties, many guides recommend not using them or washing them daily and this is something that is not really done.

I think this is the most controversial point of all, some studies indicate that the use of the gown and a good dress makes the patient feel more comfortable with their doctor, however this happens more than everything in people over 65 years.

Definitely the smock is an object that is easily contaminated, most of the microorganisms are located in the fist of the sleeves and pockets, and another thing that favors this contamination is that epidemiological studies indicate that doctors wash their robes every 15 days, I personally wash it every Friday.

Some say that the fact that the gown is contaminated does not mean that the microorganisms are passed on to the patient, but a study where they used clean mannequins were "examined" by doctors in robes and doctors without gowns. It turned out that the manikins examined by the doctors wearing gowns resulted contaminated.
