Hemisphere is the name given to any half of the globe. It comes from a Greek work that means half a sphere. Geographeres divide the Earth into hemispheres by using the equator as a boundary line. All areas north of the equator make up the Northern Hemisphere. All areas to the south make up the Southern Hemisphere. The earth may also be divided into a land hemisphere and a water hemisphere. The land hemisphere includes the half of the earth with the most land. Its middle lies near London, England. The other half of the earth, mostly water, makes up the water hemisphere. Its middle lies near New Zealand.

The equator is an imaginary line drawn around the outside of the Earth. It divides the Earth into two halves, called hemisphere. It was invented by mapmakers because it makes a convenient point from which to measure distances.
