Why are Sundials used

The sun was man's first clock. Long ago men guessed at the time of day by watching the Sun as it moved across the sky. Then men noticed that the shadow changed length and moved during the day. They found they could tell the time more accurately by watching shadows than by looking at the Sun. From this it was an easy step to inventing the sundial. The first sundials were probably just poles stuck into the ground, with stones placed around the pole to mark the position of the shadow. Sundials have been in use for many centuries and are still in use today

After the invention of sundials, other means of telling the time indoors were developed, such as hourglasses and burning candles. The invention of clocks allowed for more accurate timekeeping.
