The Bristish goverment imposed several new taxes, on things aa different aa official paper and molasses. The Americans had never been taxed before, and protested loudly. Some of taxes were removed, but import duties on luxury goods such as tea were increased. The Americans had no-one to put their case democratically to the parliament in London, so they decided to take direct action for themselves. In 1773, a band of colonists seized three British ships in Boston harbour, Massachusetts and dumped their cargo of tea oveboard. This became known as the 'Boston Tea Party', . It enraged the British goverment, who sent troops to put Massachusetts under military rule.
