Why does terracing help farmers?

The terracing system of farming is particularly important where people have to grow their food on steep, erosion prone slopes. This agricultural system has been in use for three thousand years in hillside regions of Mexico. Terracing slows the rate of intense rainfall runoff which often comes in bursts, thereby minimizing erosion while still conserving water. After rainfall the terraces enabled captured water to slowly percolate into the fields, making for an efficient irrigation system.
